Thanks

I don’t really think you have a good shot with a 3.6 and that low of an SAT score. Being hispanic is a big boost, though…I say apply, but don’t expect any good news in April. Good luck!

P.S. You might want to write an essay about your unique background (who has ever heard of a hispanic Jew from Georgia?!).

Also retake the SAT/try the ACT.

Your ECs sound interesting and well-developed. Your GPA isn’t impressive, but it does depend on your class rank, if you have one, or on how it generally stacks up against others at your school. Your GC rec ought to address that. You test scores are too low for comfort. You should retake the SAT and/or try the ACT, and you really need a better SATII, especially in a subject that should have been a slam dunk for you. Since you can’t waste space in an application explaining your scores, I would consider retaking Spanish, perhaps with listening, and taking one more in addition. (You say you are fluent in 4 languages: Hebrew, Spanish, English, and what else?)

BTW, if your background is Ecuadorean, and your parents are well-educated immigrants, I don’t know whether than will play as URM status. (Although it can be interesting in and of itself.)

If I were you I would check into the latest that you can take standardized tests for ED, and plan accordingly. Definitely take SOMETHING on the October test date, and definitely get the prep book and use it. Personally, I don’t think you realistically have time to do an SAT retake, plus the ACT, plus SATIIs and prep adequately while keep everything else up to standard, so if you are even considering the ACT, I would do an online test using realistic testing conditions and see how you do. If it looks like you will score a 33+, you could give it a shot instead of the SAT retake. I assume you took the PSAT: how did you do on that? Did it indicate that you ought to do better on the SAT, or is your SAT an increase from the PSAT? Did you prep for the SAT the first time? (Assuming that it was the first time…if what you gave us was a superscore with prep, you’ve probably maxed out your SAT and ought to consider the ACT more seriously.)

thank you so much. i do understand that I am a subpar applicant and am probably out of my mind in deciding to apply, but i appreciate the responses. Can you guys tell me how much Dartmouth ways subjective items like essays, recs, and activities in the application. Will my scores get my application simply thrown out??

Consolation… I value your expert opinion so here it goes… My S is applying ED. He has 2200 Sat’s 1480 CR+M. 3.7 GPA top private Prep school in CA. Does not rank. Rigorous classes. Eagle Scout, Vigil medal of Honor…highest honor in scouting,Junior Scoutmaster, Regional Lodge Chief, Regional Chapter Chief, Regional Lodge Activities Chairman, National Leadership HIgh Adventure Chairman, Rescue Scuba Diver who started a local scuba environmental ocean organization, 1200 community service hours working most of his summers on trails and conservation all over the US, last summer internship with SCA. Spent his Junior year Spring semester at a prestigious boarding school on a rural organic farm in Vermont. One of his teachers there who loved him and went to Dartmouth is writing one of his rec’s First Responder, Wilderness First Responder, Search and rescue team up in out local mountains. Volunteer Fireman. Wants to major in ES. What do you think? Do you think his GPA will be the death of him?

Honestly, a 2200 SAT is low for an unhooked applicant. The GPA is also low…It’s really hard to get into these schools.

5boys, create your own thread. Don’t hijack his.

OP, I think you have a decent chance. I’d apply early to maximize your chances (if Dartmouth is your top choice).
