Chance a HS Junior please?

Hey everyone,
I'm a current Junior (ethnically Indian (Asian), if that matters) in a competitive public Long Island School. My dream school has always been Northeastern and I've always been influenced as my cousin goes there as well, haha! Anyway, I moved to NY during sophomore year from a school in Canada. My freshmen grades were stellar because I was used to the environment as I have lived there for most of my life (moved from NY when I was 4, and now i'm back hah!) However, when I moved here, it took a while, maybe even taking a while, to settle down and transition into the environment of New York. It was not just academics but family as well as i supported them through helping them find jobs and what not, it's tough out there :/. So that affected my sophomore year a lot as my sophomore grades were mostly C's. Junior year was tough but I did improve and most grades were in the B level, although I'm still helping my parents. Btw, all of this will be mentioned in my rec from guidance counselor. So my sophomore year prevented me from taking any APs. Here are my stats:
Intended Major: Business/Economics, whichever one is easier to get into?
GPA: Estimated as 84, so i believe on the 4.0 scale, a 3.36 W.
SATs: I'm taking it next week, but based on diags, I'm hoping for over 1900 realistically.
SAT II's: taking Math 1 and English in June.
ACT: Taking it in September, will take a course over summer and seriously study hoping for 31+. Took prac once got a 28.
Recs: One from guidance counselor. Another from Bio teacher who absolutely loves me and calls me her son haha. One from a former BU admissions counselor who was my SAT teacher. Lastly, an additional one from a college professor who teaches business at CW post with whom I have took a dual enrollment college marketing class with. He used to work in Drexel and was very well regarded there.
EC's and Awards: I believe these could add some meaning to my app because I have some leadership positions such as editor and publicity coordinator for school newspaper; reporter, and vice president of FBLA. I have a lot of other EC's as well just dont wanna mention them. I have won many awards and honors for Business Competitions including a unique one which is was the first ever Nassau County Comptrollers Challenge where my team won 2nd place. This was a grad school project to make a business with everything an entrepreneur has to do so business plan, operations etc. We won a 4500 scholarship as well. Our business will be implemented into nassau county in the next few years which is neat! most of my EC's revolve around Business.
Rank: I don't know yet but i don't expect it to be high, probably in the top 50 or 75.
Essay: I'm a great writer when it comes to essays! I've always been good in english as i'm also an editor on the school newspaper.
So what are my chances for Northeastern, any tips or advice? I really want to get in as it is my dream School.
Senior year course load: College English 101, College Accounting, AP government, AP psychology, Algebra II and Trigonometry, Chemistry, and College Business Law.
Other schools i'm looking at are (if you can tell me my chances for..):
Boston University
Drexel University
Temple University
Fordham University
UMass Amherst
Binghamton University
Baruch College
SUNY Buffalo
SUNY Albany
SUNY Farmingdale
SUNY Old Westbury
Adelphi
Hofstra

P.s: Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance!

Oh and also, I have held a job over the summer of 2012 and currently have a job at Hollister which i will start in June.

Bump!
Anyone with any input? Much appreciated, thanks! :)

Your GPA is the worst part of your application and it hurts your chances at Northeastern, BU and Fordham. You have a better chance at getting into BU and Fordham with Northeastern being the most difficult school to get into on your list. A 30+ ACT or 2000+ SAT would help your application to Northeastern significantly.

Looking at my high school’s Naviance page for Northeastern the only person who was admitted with a lower than 3.5 GPA (4.3 scale) had a ~2100 SAT.

If I can get over 2000 or even over 30 on the SAT/ACT, respectively, can it show that i will be able to handle the work at northeastern? Like, can i mention somewhere in my essay the struggles i had and why there the test scores can represent who i am academically better? Is there any way to show that it took me a while but I overcame these struggles and am taking AP classes and do good in them (hopefully) for first term of senior year? Btw, I will be applying Early Action. I’ve heard you have a better chance if done so? Thank you so much!

Have your guidance counselor mention your struggle of moving internationally while in high school and that the adjustment took a while. If you do make it the topic of your essay, focus on the things you have done not the things you haven’t.

Applying early does make a difference in your chances. And I would recommend it, just don’t be let down if you get deferred.

I don’t know which school you would have a better chance at, you have a lot of business extracurricular activities but the business school is more difficult to get into than the college of arts and sciences. Don’t apply to any school for economics hoping to transfer to the business school, transferring to Northeastern’s business school internally isn’t very easy. Apply for what you want to do, the name of a school isn’t everything, Fordham and BU both have excellent business programs as well.

Thanks for the info, and help, i really appreciate it! I’ll be sure to follow your steps.

But also, I forgot to update the situation:
I got my SAT scores back and i ended up with what i believe is a shock, haha!
CR: 680
M: 760
W: 800 (WHOA)
TOTAL: 2240
So what are my chances for northeastern, now?

Bump, any input now that my scores are high?

You’re in! (Unless an non-merit based part of your application scares admissions away).

Are you being serious? haha, you don’t know how relieved i am to hear that. Knowing that my gpa is an 84 on a 100 scale, it scares me. but i updated my resume and everything and not trying to brag or anything, but i have over 8 awards just in business, an internship in marketing, held 3 jobs, and over 150 volunteer hours. and then numerous leadership positions in clubs at school.
Now i need to worry about how to afford it lol.
Btw, is it true schools like NYU, Northeastern and BU favor those who tend to have higher Test scores as opposed to their gpa; that’s what i heard from friends who applied. I know that these schools are holistic and that they look at the applicant as a whole but still?

Yes, a 1440/1600 is far higher than the 1360/1600 average for 2012 Northeastern reported. The high score should convince Admissions that your GPA is just because of the competitive and difficult nature of your high school (as long as you challenged yourself).

With your new score you should also consider applying to Stern (its a toss up because of the GPA, but why not). Although if you need financial aid NYU probably isn’t the place for you.

I just went through the admissions process as I’m entering Northeastern this fall so from my experience those schools do favor higher scores. I’m graduating magna cum laude from my high school, but many of the summa cum laudes got waitlisted or rejected because their scores weren’t on par with their GPA.

Also your extracurriculars for business are stellar I don’t see why any business program would reject you.

The problem is that my schools works very differently and doesnt allow you to take APs randomly, they want extremely high grades in regents level courses which are surprisingly hard because of the harsh curves in our school. Its weird because those who have took regular courses throughout their high school career at our school tend to have lower gpas then those of advanced. It is very unfair. Instead of taking chemistry this year, i took advantage of our distinguished business program, and took college marketing which led me into an internship. Next Year, however, will be the first time i’ll be taking APs. So hopefully adcoms will see this that i want to challenge myself even in senior year and continue to improve.
Ahh, i see, well i wish you luck at northeastern. I heard its an excellent place, which is why i want to go there as well.
Thanks so much  So just based on my EC’s and Scores, do you think I will look very attractive to adcoms at northeastern and other schools?
Yes, I’m considering Stern although i believe it will be a reach; how about USC? Just putting it out there!
Thanks a lot for your time btw!
