Chance a Jr for Boston University

Hey. I'm a junior right now living in Long Island, NY. I'm an asian male looking to apply to Boston University. Here's some info. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm so worked up about this college business and all these false securities, any advice that's somewhat clear cut that can lead me into the right direction would be great. Thanks in advance for the advice/info by the way. So here goes:

I go to an all boys high school that doesn't offer AP or administer the Regents. Our coursework already involves AP courses (see below), and we don't take Regents because our Trimesters/Comprehensive exams supposedly outweigh the difficulty of the Regents. We have no electives and can't choose our coursework, and we have been told that our grading system is different from neighboring catholic high schools (ie. our 85 averages equal a low 90's at rival schools)

My coursework as of Junior Year with first Trimester Grades
English 11 (A-)
AP Chem (B+)
Spanish 11 (A-)
Math 11 Trig (B)
AP Us Hist. (B+)

Soph Year with overalls:
English 10 (A)
Bio 101 (B-)
Spanish 10 (A)
Math 10 Geometry (B-)
AP Euro. Hist (B-)

Freshman Year with Overalls:
English 9 (A)
Earth Sci (A-)
Spanish 9 (A)
Math 9 (A-)
World Hist. (A-)

Extra Credit/Extracurricular:
-Audio/Visual Club VP, have been dedicated to it since freshman year
-Woodworking/Carpentry (worked at school for a summer job this past summer as a Carpenter)
-Hospital Volunteers
-General Student Organization
-Library Service
-National Honor Society
- I work at school as a janitor after school and on Friday nights (totals to about 12-13 hours a week)

So, is there any chance of me getting into BU? I've known alumni who have graduated from my high school with a 3 year average of everything from a 96 to an 89, and all of them have been accepted into BU. I know I have to step things up this year, and it's tough. I just need some advice on what to do, and maybe even an idea of if I can get into BU or not. Any ideas? You can be honest, it's OK. It would help a great deal now if I realize that BU would be a reach school, instead of using it as a false security to hold me down till Senior year.

On a final note, will Early Decision improve my chances of getting into BU? Also, if anyone knows, how do the admissions standards of BU compare to that of NYU's? Once again, any input would be appreciated. Thanks once again in advance!

I think you will be fine for BU, if you keep your grades up and score well on SAT/ACTs. Your ECs are pretty standard, but keep it up with the AV club, and emphasize that in your app. I don't think BU is really terribly difficult to get into, and I bet AV Club would help, since BU is a great media school...
I don't know about ED helping, although I'm sure it would put you at at least a slight advantage...
Also, I don't have any exact numbers, but I think BU is quite a bit easier to get into than NYU.

thanks for the info. I had a feeling about NYU being harder to get into, but I thought about that twice when I found out that BU has just as many applicants as NYU does. Haven't taken the SATs yet, our school requires us to take them in May of our junior year then once again in October of senior year.

Has anyone gotten accepted into BU and would like to share their stats? Thanks again guys!

i think you have a good shot at bu right now.

if you're completely positive that you want to go there, apply ed- it always helps.

of course you'll have a better idea when you take your sats and your sat iis and no one can tell you anything for certain until you take them. and leadership positions in your extra curriculars will never hurt.

nyu might be harder to get into just because you live in long island. i don't really agree with bu being easier to get in to- i think that's just a general assumption due to rankings- which usually aren't even correct. although if you apply to the college of arts and sciences at nyu- you'd have a better chance than if you apply for stern or something.

as for acceptances- you can always check out bu's own site or collegeboard to find stats of accepted students.

personally, i know someone who was accepted with about a 3.6 or 3.7, a 1320/1600 sat, pretty good sat iis and tons of extra curriculars- particularly in sports.

good luck!!!

You're a fit or better at BU, and a medium reach at NYU.

excellent chances if not a safe if your SAT/GPA are the average of what the college looks for.

thanks for all the help everyone, especially greentopaz! This definitely narrows down my choices and clarifies my decisions. I'm thinking of doing ED for Boston U too, and I know a couple of buddies who are academically similar to me who just got into BU with ED. Thanks again!

Can anyone else chime in?

Check with your parents about finances. ED is binding, and if you're accepted, that means $50K (tuition & room/board) annually if you get no financial aid. If you need to compare aid offers, then apply RD.

You don't mention your SAT scores. From your grades, I think your GPA is fine. Are you applying to COM or CAS?

Haven't taken the SAT's yet. Took the PSAT's and got an 85th percentile with no preparation going in. I've noticed that I have to study for them and the folks would like for me to take a prep course, which I am leaning towards anyway.

Also, I plan to apply to CAS at both schools.
