I'm midway through my Junior year, and I'm wondering if I have a chance at getting into Stern. Here is some info:

Rank: My school doesn't rank its students
School info: One of the top 10 public schools in the state of NJ, extremely competitive, very difficult classes compared to other public schools
GPA: UW 88-89 W 91-92 (not really sure about my GPA. My school does GPA on a scale out of 100)
SAT: 2310/1560
SAT II: Math II 800 Chem 790 Bio M 800
APs: Chem - 5 Bio - 5 Calc AB - 5 Eng - 5 Music Theory - 4
ECs:
-I've been playing piano for over 9 years now. I've performed in Paris once and in Carnegie Hall 7 times (this year will be my 8th). I've also passed Grade 8 with distinction on the ABRSM test and I now teach several intermediate students piano.
-Been playing violin for 6 years and I've been in the school orchestra since 4th grade (didn't take it freshman year though because I had to take a mandatory elective instead). I play in an ensemble group outside of school.
-Founder and president of the Dance Team
-100+ hours of community service

Thanks!

Your SAT scores are outstanding, especially for NYU stern. An 88 - 91 GPA is anywhere from a 3.3 - 3.6 GPA, which is also very good. While a GPA lower than a 3.5 isn’t too appealing to Stern, the SAT will make up for it a lot. If you have a 92 GPA, which is about a 3.5 - 3.6, I think your chances are very good.

Besides music, I dont see anything special about the ECs. If you are applying to a business school, especially one like stern, I would expect your ECs to be filled with business related Ecs. Possibly ones like DECA, FBLA, even model UN would look pretty good. Unfortunately the lack of Ecs that show interest and relevance to NYU may hurt your chances.

best of luck

You sound exactly like my friend! He’s currently a freshman at Stern.

My input is to specifically focus on what you’re passionate about (while still pertaining to business)

Also, seek out summer programs/internships/shadowing/a job this summer!

I rank: Internship>Job>Summer Program (non-internship)>shadowing>volunteering

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies! I was starting to worry because of my horrible GPA (compared to a lot of other applicants at least).

About business-related ECs, I’m thinking of starting a program in which several friends and I sell hats to raise money for cancer research. While IDK if it might work out here, it has a high chance of success when I sell the hats in China (I’m going this summer) because most casual hats like caps are ridiculously overpriced there. Do you think this program will help me a lot and even out my bad GPA?

NYU takes mid year reports so I’m sure you can bring that GPA up. Other than that, you have a very good chance.
