Chance a junior, please?

Right now I'm thinking about Arcadia, Rutgers, Ramapo, Rider, Quinnipiac, American, Syracuse and Northeastern. Those last three are a bit of a reach for me, but I think it will be worth it to apply no matter what.

Right now I'm a junior in high school, my GPA is around a 90 (weighted, my school doesn't send out unweighted GPAs because they don't do class rank), I don't know exactly because it hasn't been updated in a while but I'm confident I could bring it up to at least a 91 or 92 by the time I apply.

I took the SATs once so far, and got a 1690 with no prior preparation, so I'm taking a class now and hoping to wind up with around 1900.

Honors/APs:
World History Honors
English II Honors
US I Honors
English III Honors

and senior year...
English IV Honors
AP Spanish OR AP Gov

Newspaper staff for 3 years (freshman can't join, so that is the maximum)
1 year as a page editor, and hopefully one year as editor-in-chief
2 years as a member of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
2 years as Homework Help Center volunteer at local library (around 60 volunteer hours)

Both the newspaper and the homework center have selective admissions.

I know some of these schools are bit of a stretch for me, but I think it's definitely worth applying, and I'm probably going in as a Journalism major.
Anyone have any advice on what I could do in the next few months to increase my chances of being admitted, or schools that I should also consider?

Thank you in advance!

Out of those schools Northeastern is the biggest reach. Definitely work on your SAT’s.

Alright, thanks for the advice!

You can definitely raise it to a 1900, even higher, but you have to work for it. (: I agree with the above poster. American and Syracuse are still pretty tough, especially if you’re OOS.

Are you a NJ resident? If so, you’ll be in at Ramapo, and possibly Rutgers. Also! Seton Hall University. My friend’s dad went there for law school (and they’re family is very, very well off and educated.) SHU is a great NJ school – small and Catholic, but it is a great campus. (:

I’d suggest Penn State, but according to my stepfather, it’s HUGE, if you’re okay with that. How about UPittsburgh, or UDelaware? College Board is your friend! (:

I suggest working on your ECs – increase volunteer, do something community-involved that you’d really like. For example, get your classes to create V-Day cards for a nearby hospital, or create small love couplets and sell them on Valentine’s Day (either with food or with a rose) and donate the money somewhere. Something cute, and maybe tie in writing. Just little ideas I pulled out. Not too original, but some brain stormers!

And hurrah to class of '11! :P

Thanks so much, those are some great suggestions! I’m taking an SAT class with Princeton Review right now and I will definitely do some work after that. I am an NJ resident, and Seton Hall is a great suggestion!

:)

Marist, Emerson and Ithaca might be worth a look also.

^I agree with Poi. Marist is definitely in your reach, I’m pretty sure.

Oh thanks! Those are some good suggestions!
