Chance a junior! please=)

So I'm Korean living in Long island (NY) for about 6 yrs, which will be 7 yrs by the time i apply to college.

SAT (jan) 2120, 800 math, 670 cr, 650 writing
I'm planning on breaking 2200 on either this march or may SAT

SAT II: Korean 790
Math 2c 800
Chem (planning to take in june, but i'll probably get 800 since i'm in AP chem)

u/w GPA 9/10th grade (out of 4.00) = 3.52
w GPA 9/10th = 3.63,
1st semester 11th = 3.85
so its improving... hopefully that matters.

Colleges: (in order of importance)
Cornell (probably ED)
CMU
Johns Hopkins
U michigan
illinois U
NYU
BU
SUNY (bing/stony)
oh and my major is probably going to be engineering

Thank you in advance for chancing me, and i will chance you back at request!:)

Cornell (probably ED) - Reach
CMU - Reach
U michigan - Match if you apply early
illinois U - Match?
Lehigh - Match
NYU - Match/In (you might get LSP’d with the low scores in 2 sections though)
BU - In
SUNY (bing/stony) - If you’re not in, no one is

Once you bring up your SATs, Cornell will probably be a match as well if you write really great essays and make it seem like you fit in there. Don’t know THAT much about CM sorry.

Haha yea, the SUNY were my safeties, but i was just trying to make sure im not the only one who thinks that. just making sure.
What’s LSP?

Cornell would be a problem if you dont bring your GPA up to AT LEAST a 3.65. Then you would have a good chance of making it

bumpbump

bump-
Please chance me!
i’ll chance back

Cornell (probably ED) Reach
CMU Reach
Johns Hopkins Reach
U michigan Match
illinois U Match
NYU Match
BU In
SUNY (bing/stony In

Your EC’s are strong and some of your test scores are impressive, however, that GPA is bringing you down. Try to get straight A’s this semester. On your college app’s I’d say that you should really elaborate on your culture and stuff, it’s a plus:)

Colleges: (in order of importance)
Cornell (probably ED) - Reach
CMU - high match
Johns Hopkins - low reach/ high match
U michigan - match
illinois U - IN
NYU - match
BU - low match
SUNY (bing/stony) - IN

The only downside for you is your GPA. Others look good. Even though your SAT score of 2120 may not look high for Koreans, colleges usually only sum up Reading and Math section score; so, I think you do have a solid SAT score.

I’d say Cornell reach, CMU and JHU low reaches, Michigan and NYU matches, not sure about state schools but probably in haha.

bump 10char

cornell-reach
cmu and jhu-high match or low reach
michigan and nyu-match
others-in

Yeah, Cornell might be a reach unless you pull up the GPA, but I think mich, hopkins, and the others should be a match (maybe a low reach for a couple). ECs are great, though make sure you have a depth not breadth strategy: pick a few extracurrics and focus well on them… But, good luck!

Cornell (probably ED)–high match
CMU–in
Johns Hopkins–low reach
U michigan–in
illinois U–in
NYU–way in
BU–in
SUNY (bing/stony)–in

Your probably in everywhere except cornell and cmu, just becuase your test scores and grades are a little low and they are already accepting tons of Koreans with incredible numbers.

Yeah, if you bring your SAT up a little bit, you’re in everywhere except for CMU and cornell, which are low reaches and maybe JHU/Michigan, where you’re a high match.

Last year, I saw one student was early accepted to Cornell Engineering with chem HD grade B and not good at English. However, he was very strong at Computer science. As far as I know, cornell admission process is different than any other Ivies. Probably, the engineering dept has a power to select engineering students. It seems to me that you are not requesting FA. Right? I recommend you to apply Cornell ED. However, you should prepare and show your passion of specific area in your essay, also supported by recommendation of your EC teacher or class teacher.

I will be applying for FA… Cornell FA system is like the only reason why I’m so interested in Cornell. My family had about 27K income last year, and if I’m right, that should get me a full ride to Cornell… Will applying for FA lower my chances of getting into Cornell?

LSP is the Liberal Studies Program. It’s basically a different version of MAP and you get put in there instead of CAS (assuming you’re applying to CAS) where the classes are smaller. It’s generally believed they put you in there if you’re “not ready” for the big NYU (but I think it’s a load of BS). I’ve seen mostly people with like 800 in one section and 600 in another being put in LSP or if just one part of their app isn’t up to par. It’s basically they ran out of room in CAS and put you there instead.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, you get put in CAS either sophomore or junior year depending on how quickly you fufill the LSP requirements.

Oh… So it’s basically the same thing except more class requirements…?

Shameless Bump.
