chance a junior

a bit early to chance, since i'm not even halfway through junior year, but this is what i have so far.

school is pretty competitive, my class (of 2008) has 1000+ people

GPA: 4.0 unweighted
Rank: we don't really rank, but i've highest weighted gpa in class so far
SAT I: 2360
SAT II: Physics 800, Bio 790, Chem 800
AP's (as of sophomore year): Chem 5, Bio 5

Extracurriculars:
Violin since 5th grade, in my school orchestra
Science Olympiad - as of 10th grade, won my state events, 6th at nats
Sports: Cross-country in fall, track in winter and spring

Volunteering:
haven't counted hrs

i guess i'm just looking for advice on what to aim for, other than maintaining the grades. (summer internship, etc?)

o and maybe early

o and I'm Asian and male

forgot a few things:

student tutoring for two years,
writing tutor (a significant contribution to the school, apparently)
Library Advisory Board

I think you're low on ECs. What type of volunteering do you do? Are you involved in any organizations that require leadership? Did you compete in anything that requires initiative (I know Sci O fits into this category)?

I think the most important things that you appear to be lacking at this stage are leadership and clear interests. Your numerical stats are great, but I think Stanford will want to see someone who is passionate about something and has demonstrated that clearly with their activities. They will also want to see that you have made a significant contribution to something and have learned from your experience. And by significant contribution, I don't mean "groundbreaking cancer research"; it could be something like being the president of a community service organization or tutoring kids or captain of a sports team. I think students at Stanford tend to have multiple leadership positions, but I'm not positive (I haven't taken a survey or anything).

Now that I've said this, please be careful. Don't go arbitrarily signing up for 10 clubs and running for officer in all of them. Stanford will see through resume-bulking, and that is a turn-off. Please remember what I said about passions and interests and contributions. Before you try for anything new, think about whether you really enjoy it and if you can put your heart into it.

This is an extremely important point that most people don't realize.

yeah i'm quite aware of the resume-bulking most people do, but i also realize that i'm not as qualified as my friends with similar stats who is captain of state winning chess team, etc., etc.

that's why this year i'm aiming to excel in particular science competitions (which i love)
