You made a post in January stating that you were waiting to hear back and to “calm the nerves of someone whose friends all got into ivies” and that you were accepted to George Mason and Virginia Tech already. But somehow 8 months later for Fall 2022 semester you are still in high school and taking 7 AP courses and 2 additional courses? I am a bit confused about what you are trying to do here
Deleted and good luck at VT.
Good luck in your future endeavors
I particularly liked this gem.
For those that don’t know, a typical SSP attendee will get into multiple HYPSM colleges. And everyone attending SSP knows this from past history.
Add to that this “applicant” being Hispanic and Native American, and admission to HYPSM pretty much becomes a lock.
They made the same post on reddit and got a lot of praise. Guessing that could be part of this all
Hmm… hopefully OP will return and clarify.
Hmm as described the role goes far above the role that my kids and their numerous friends who are research assistants at labs have. Those roles generally have little autonomy and don’t have most of the responsibilities described. If true I wouldn’t say this is a research assistant role. What is the actual role? If you at actually the lead researcher I would say that, just make sure it is backed up and perhaps explain how you attained that role.
From what you described in the message above (copied below), I question why you’d be going to college at all. You are already ahead of most scientists and most of society. And still have time for work at Popeyes. Something isn’t right…
“In all fairness, that is what I do. I have a lab, and I run it. I write up the experimental designs, get budgetary and advisory approval, and manage my experiments. I manage our equipment for the most part, and I am in charge of writing reports on all preliminary data. I have people in my lab that help with this, but for the most part I tell them what we are doing. Don’t get me wrong, I have people to report to, and I definitely don’t have total autonomy, so how should I word this?”
As an engineer that runs a lab, if I read a CV of a high schooler saying that they are a chemical engineer and a PI I would not believe it.
A few thoughts:
- You were a research assistant, not a chemical engineer. Put down research assistant on your resume/CV/brag sheet.
- Apply to the Ivies that you’re interested. You have a good chance.
- Make sure to apply to a true safety school, which would also mean a financial safety.
- Use the NPC on the schools’ websites to confirm what you should expect to receive for financial aid.
And to everybody else complaining about the Popeye’s job:
Have none of you ever worked at a minimum wage job before while just starting out? Maybe this student worked there for a summer or two. Given all of his/her other activities, it totally makes sense that the student wouldn’t be working there on a regular basis.
Also, re: your question on which school to apply as ED/EA:
ONLY apply to a school as ED if you know that it’s affordable. I’d you’re not certain, apply EA. Be aware that some Ivy schools have restricted EA, which means you only apply to one school as an EA applicant.
I don’t think anyone is insulting the Popeyes job.
OP noted he might get into it after stating all he did in the lab…that’s not realistic given the purported strength or responsibility of managing a lab as they stated they do.
OP already needs to answer that he was saying last year he was awaiting decisions.
Frankly OP is not coming off as believable and hope comes back to clear up their story.
In any case it is clear that either the January post or this post is false as they can’t both be true
There is also no requirement that either of them are true.
Huh ?
I can’t speak to his motivations but I would encourage all to be kind. This is someone’s kid.
OP clearly there are inconsistencies and inaccuracies in what you have posted. CC can be forgiving and supportive if you are forthright people will offer earnest advice.
Regardless good luck.
Did you decide to take a gap year because you didn’t get accepted at those ivies…or are you considering transferring?
I have been accepted to George Mason University and Virginia Tech, both of which are affordable for me. When it comes to my budget for college, I should be able to afford the colleges I am applying to, assuming I get some form of financial aid.
Not every application needs a resume attached, but yours may benefit from it since you will not be constrained by the common app.
That said, your ECs do not need to include a summer job from a couple years ago.
Highly selective schools want to hear about jobs in fast food when the student does not have any other ECs and perhaps the job was needed to help their family.
You have a great shot at top colleges. Do not overplay your hand.
I thought this was a fake post by just the title of the thread, that’s what caught my attention in the first place.
