Story:
I came to this boarding school in Pennsylvania as a recruit for hockey. Known for having the best hockey program in the state of Pennsylvania, people from all over the world (as close as Pennsylvania and as far as Russia, Czech Republic, Canada...etc) are recruited there regularly. In 2004, I was selected as one of the top six defensemen in the Mid-Atlantic Region (NY,NJ,PA,MD,DE) and was asked to play in many showcases. This continued until 2006 and I moved onto the new school. I had high hopes of being a pro, the first Japanese NHL hockey player. My focus was always on hockey, I had very little interest in academics. I was heavily recruited to many schools/semi-pro junior leagues, and I knew at that time that I would go to college for hockey. Then during my sophomore year, disaster happened. I had a season ending injury, and I required surgery. My grades at the time weren't absolutely atrcoious, however, my surgery required routine check ups back home in Connecticut, I missed tons of school due to the fact that I had to travel home every week and my grades dropped horribly. Not only that, recruiting stopped, I was depressed and was a horrendous mess. I then soon realized that I need to change my focus from athletics to academics. Ever since then, my academics and attitude towards school have improved dramatically. I still play hockey now, but doctors say that my wrist will never heal fully and that I shouldn't play much longer. (Hell, I need extended time to write in-class essays because I get such bad pain in my wrist). Therefore I am NOT interested in playing hockey in university.

Misc.

Essays: I will write about how my injury caused me to open my eyes and to step up. My LSA essay and my Ross essay I think are very good as well.
Teacher Recs: will be VERY STRONG (one is my advisor who watched me through the whole maturing process)
Counselor letter: He will write about how my academics dropped due to my injury and extended absence from school.

Hooks:
I think I'm pretty damn unique compared to some of the other asian applicants. Will that make me stand out over the other (I play piano, I play violin, I'm in the asian club) asians?
Ridiculous Upward Trend

Will my sophomore year kill me?

I have no idea how to calculate UM GPA.

Thanks all.

Just a tip on how UM weights your GPA:

I went to one of the Michigan college seminars two weeks ago and received some helpful information. Michigan will only count your sophomore and junior years, but will still look at your freshmen year grades to see how you did. Any grades in the A range (A+, A, A-) will be counted as a 4.0. Any grades in the B range (B+, B, B-) will be counted as 3.0, etc.

They will still, obviously, look at the rigor of your schedules during those two years and reflect that upon your grades.

^ U of M is no longer calculating GPA to save time, and a couple of other reasons. They’re using your UW GPA from grades 9-12 that your school provides.

o_O

^???

Where’d you hear that?

I think people would have heard about that by now. I don’t even think my HS does UW GPA.

My michigan GPA for my Junior year would be about 3.75.

I dont know what I would do about my sophomore year grades because they were heavily affected by my long absence of school and also by my inability to use a pencil in school for more than 3 months. But if you count my sophomore year, it would be approximately a 3.5 UM GPA.

Right now however, my UW GPA and UM GPA of my senior year is a 4.0.

What do you mean by “top boarding school”? It is a way over-used term. Everyone who goes to boarding school love to call their school a “top boarding school” while there are only a few like the AESDCH, Lawrenceville, Groton, St Paul and the like that are truly “top”, then there are some that are borderline top like Loomis, Taft and the likes and then there are the wannabes like Berkshire, Kent, Hill, Merscenburg…

As far as I am know there are no REAL “top boarding schools” in the state of Pennsylvania.

It’s hard to know how to chance you unless we know what tier your boarding school is…so it would be helpful if you could give a group of school that are similar to yours if you do not want to reveal where you go.

I guess we would be in a little bit higher tier than Hill. But we always play schools in hockey such as Taft, Choate, Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss etc. Academically though, we’re a pretty solid school.

You’re chances at admission are good. I’m a hockey player myself, I’m sorry to hear about your injury. That sucks but at least you have adopted a positive attitude toward dealing with it. Best of luck.

Adam

Thanks Adam.

Any more opinions? Especially with this new policy?

Last bump… please?

When did you complete application?

I didn’t, I’m thinking of sending sometime this or next week.

n… Need to head up,
move quick and send hard slap applicaton in the “net”
not front of “G”, don’t forget rushing to Rebound.
I think you are good
