Chance a lackluster kid with decent SAT scores

First off, I'm an Asian male
Also, I am now a junior, so this is all tentative..
Also, my high school usually sends 20-25 kids to good schools while most go to the state school

UW GPA - 3.6 with an upward trend
Class Rank - 41/254
Workload - Pretty Rigorous (Note that it's not the most rigorous it can be, didn't take APUSH or Honors English til Junior year =)
Also, I finished at Spanish Level 3 and couldn't move on to Spanish Level 4 due to scheduling conflicts, My guidance counselor said that she would send a letter explaining that had I been able to take it, I would have..Do you guys think that this letter will even do anything? Also, since I couldn't move onto Spanish 4, I ended up taking Italian 1 =

SAT 1: 2300 (1560)
Math: 800
Reading Comprehension: 760
Writing: 740

SAT IIs:
Math II: 800
Chemistry: 750
Biology M: 770

AP Tests:
Chemistry: 5
World History: 5
At Senior Year, I would be taking (but don't think that the scores I would get would matter as I would take these tests in May, so the application process would have been done by then):
AP BC Calc
AP Biology
AP English
AP Psych

Extracurricular Activities:
Freshman Year: Key Club, Band
Sophomore Year: Key Club, Varsity Tennis
Junior Year: Academic Decathlon (Made it to States), Key Club, Debate, Math League, Science League
Senior Year: Academic Decathlon, Key Club, Math League (Treasurer), Science League, (Possibly Debate?)

Community Service: 200+ hours
Tutoring, Hospital, Babysat little kids while they waited for their parents

Distinctions:
National Merit (Most likely Semi-finalist)
If I enrolled in the Columbia Science Honors Program, is that even worth mentioning?

Internship:
Worked over the summer for an advertising company in the city

Essays: Solid
Recs: Solid

Also, if I'm not in National Honor Society..is it really bad for my chances of getting into these schools?

Colleges I want to go to:
Cornell (This would be my dream school, I would most likely apply to the Arts and Science College here. Also, I would be applying Early Decision here, if that helps any.)
UPenn (I know its pretty far reach for me)
Columbia (Like UPenn, I also realize that this would be a pretty high reach for me)
NYU Sterns
Duke
Johns Hopkins
Rutgers (Pre-Med, I know that this program is extremely hard and really selective..)

So! What do you guys think my chances are?
Any input would be nice

Your SATs are not decent, they are AMAZING. Your rank seems to be a big problem. If you can afford to financial I would adivse that you definitely make use of the Early Decision option at either Cornell, Penn, or Columbia. Out of the three your chances are probably higher at Cornell (especially ED).
The spanish thing problem does not matter at all so don't worry about it. Another problem would be your ECs colleges like to see commitment for multiple years and it does not look like you carried your ECs all the way through high school. I see that you have Key Club for all four years so i would definitely advise you to become an officer in that club and be involved in that.

Most of the schools on your list accept under 10% who are not in the top 10% of their graduating class. This includes their football and basketball players and other athletes, legacies and URMs. And while you have good scores, they are nothing unusual at any of those schools.

While you never know, choose some match and safe schools too.

Keep bringing your grades up and consider schools that are less selective. There are a lot of schools that are a little less selective that are still great schools for pre-med or whatever. gl

The spanish thing won't be a problem. However being Asian doesn't help things. Also your EC's aren't amazing but if you go to a small private school (like me) then it would be understandable because it can be hard to fill out and get clubs running in these schools. Your not guaranteed and Ivy's, Duke or JHU but I think you have good chances at all of them.

it's NYU Stern, not sterns.

and, please don't say your sat scores are just decent - you make yourself out to be a dickhead.

hahahahah NYU Sterns. Listen, i think you have a pretty decent shot at all of these schools. your ethnicity and ECs arent on your side but if you can convince the adcoms that your reallllllly interested in their schools then you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck.

^Most of these schools could care less about demonstrated interest. Please do your homework before misleading kids!

If you are a NM semifinalist or finalist, make sure you do not rule out offers from other schools. There are some excellent schools with outstanding honors programs that may meet your needs.

is it going to help him if he was first generation,low-income and immigrant, but asian?????
b/c my stats and his are quite similar....

you SAT's are amazing! Class rank may hurt a bit. Good chances though.

yipyip, not really. Its actually harder for Asians to get into these schools than it is for whites. Now if either of you was black, you'd have a much better chance.

^^what ivy likes first generation and low-income? (i know it wont help that much, but, do they care??)

Well, you’re going to want to find one that is need blind. For some schools, the thought of giving a out a ton of financial aid is a deal breaker.

you seem to be on the right track to me. stay focused, show a lot of passion for learning and good luck!
please chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/660584-id-appreciate-chance-two-hmmm-maybe-three-p.html

hmom, youre an idiot. Schools do care about demonstrated interest. You have no clue what you’re talking about. If they learn that you would definately go there if they accept you, it makes you much more appealling.
