Chance a legacy? -Class of 2012

Georgetown is my DREAM. I was born there, I grew up there and I have visited the campus hundreds of times. I'm really nervous about my current position. I'm confident about my entire application EXCEPT SATs. They are the worst. I'm a really bad test taker and I don't want these scores to hurt me.

Connections:
Both of my parents went to Georgetown as well as many of my other relatives and grandparents. We've been donating to Georgetown for years.

What I've done:
I was deferred in EA, after i was deferred I sent Gtown an update letter, got my doctor (who went to Gtown) to write me a letter, my guidance counselor about Active Minds, and my Spanish teacher commending me on my linguistic skills. My college counselor has mentioned me to my representative a few times. A family friend of ours, who teaches ocassionally at Gtown Law talked to someone for me as well.
I also sent Georgetown a supplemental essay about 3 weeks ago that talked about an important experience in my life. Basically I've been hounding them. lol
FREAKING OUT.

I don’t think anyone here can give you accurate prospects because we do not know the extent of the connections you have. However, I will say this: Relax a bit and be mentally prepared for a rejection. Your stats are below average, so you don’t want a potential rejection to devastate you when it doesn’t need to…

I don’t necessarily think being a legacy will do anything for you on its own. So don’t bank on that getting you in. However, given the fact that you got so many people to write good things about you the second time around, you might have a better chance of getting in. ECs are good, but SAT and subject tests are low, as you already know. All you can do at this point is wait and pray…good luck to you!!

Yeah, I’m probably way over my head. Especially with my stupid scores. I just wasn’t sure how much the legacy thing counted. Ive heard it doesn’t matter too much tho. I’m just confused because I was accepted early to Boston College with no connections. This college thing is confusing.

My major is Russian too. I forgot to mention that

Wow i was deferred gtown too and accepted early to BC haha. Someone once told me that legacy does not help as much EA, not sure why that would be. A girl in my school who is 4th in class (4.8 GPA) with a 33 ACT and double legacy also got deferred so hang in there, you are not the only one! Lets hope we both get in second round!

Ditto to everything busterbrown said…I was deferred from georgetown with similar GPA and class standing (top 5%) as the OP and accepted early to BC honors. It seems like a lot of seemingly strong applicants were deferred early to gtown (like the girl busterbrown knows) so hopefully we’re in the top 10% of deferrees! Good luck, I think you’ve definitely got a chance!

Boston College’s acceptance rate (~28) is about 11 percentage points higher than GU’s (~17%), so acceptance to BC is not always indicative of great chances of getting into Georgetown. Predicated alone on the anecdotes here shared, legacy might not be all that powerful for GU. I was always under the impression that legacy admits usually were accepted in the EA round. Maybe not…

^You are absolutely correct that admission to BC is not a good predictor for admission to Georgetown. Admission to GU is a far better predictor for admission to BC Honors. However, you are mistaken about legacy admits during Georgetown EA process–unlike most other colleges, it is more difficult for ALL applicants to be admitted to Georgetown EA–including legacy–in fact, there is no additional review of legacy candidates during the EA process like there is during the RD round. All applicants admitted EA at Georgetown are deemed by the admission committees as “sure things”–that is, the committees are convinced that they would be admitted during the RD round, regardless of who else applies during the RD process.

your SATS really arent terrible, although i realize theyre on the lower end for georgetown… can someone please enlighten me as to what “good” sats for gtown would be? i have a R: 730, M: 650, W: 670 but I’m a junior and thats a first try with no preperation attempt… i think from my last take that both the math and writing will be in the 700s. is this considered decent for gtown?

Sounds like my scores on the first “i’ll wing this” attemp. You’ll be in good shape if you do some practice tests (in full; it’s the best way) in the summer and you’ll knock the october test out of the park. Gtown doesn’t look at writing btw. With prep, I’d predict a 750+ for reading and a 720+ for math, which are great scores

Medmen has it right. Georgetown does not consider legacy status in the Early Action phase of the admission cycle.

Check out this article from The Hoya, Georgetown’s school paper. It gives good insight as to how admissions views legacy applicants.

[" + pageTitle + "](http://www.thehoya.com/mobile/legacies-at-home-on-the-hilltop-1.2726201)

I am a grad and have a daughter applying as well. You look well qualified and if your parents have been active alumni, that will help a lot. Good luck!!

Sorry link didn’t come through. It is from The Hoya and It is called legacies at home on the hilltop. Google it and you will find.

Medman: Thank you for the insight. That’s why I put “Maybe not”–I wasn’t sure.

Try this:
[Legacies at Home on the Hilltop - The Hoya](http://www.thehoya.com/legacies-at-home-on-the-hilltop-1.2726201#.T2PN7sALVEM.email)

haha, i applied to georgetown as well. Ziad and Eyad Saqr from the “Legaucies at Home on the Hilltop - The Hoya” article are my brothers. that’s awesome

Avera803: I think it’s time for a little perspective here. Stop listening (and stop saying yourself) to those who say that your SAT scores and Subject tests are “low”…everyone on this discussion board needs a reality check! If you are not accepted to Georgetown, it will not be because of your 670-63-730 SATs…it will be based on factors about you and how you present yourself that we in this forum have no way of knowing. It’s too, too convenient to blame it on SATS.

Can I get chanced real quickly?

2160, m 790, cr 650, w 720
Top 10%, weighted 4.0
Eagle scout, debate captain and alltime leading scorer for school, swim and football all four years, ap scholar, Nhs, captain of future problem solving team (5th in internationals)

…and the kicker is a letter of recommendation from a congressman ensuring an active internship beginning freshman year upon my acceptance (Govt major)

^ I hate to break it to you, but that’s not much of a kicker. I interned for a Congressman (who went to Georgetown himself), and he wrote me a great rec after the internship. I saw it, and he talked about how he saw in me a future Foreign Service Officer, and all this other, really personal, really complimentary stuff. And that, combined with my 2240, 4.3, and two other great internships (in addition to all my ECs) wasn’t enough. Don’t count on that rec to offset a negative on your app, because recs are a pretty unimportant part of the application.
