EC's
- 4 years of band, 2 years of Band/Marching Band at a program that in '04 was named the 3rd best music program in the country by the Grammy Awards
- 2 years of Philosophy Club, 2 years of Political Forum club - Vice President in Sophmore year
- 2 years of being Founder/President of Philosophy/Political Forum club (I moved to Hawaii and set this club up)
- 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo - 3-4 years
- NHS for 2 years (I would've had a leadership position but transferring in the middle of HS doesn't help in getting LD positions.....)
- I set up and organized a relief trip to the Philippines and my family and I went there for 2 weeks giving aid to the more rural/poorer areas.
- Only 150 or so hours of community service. That'll probably jump up.

Hook/Why I'm Unique:
I'm the son of a Navy Captain so I've gone to 14 different schools from elementary -> high school and it has been hard to really get involved enough anywhere to get some good LD positions...I'm 1/2 white 1/2 filipino and atm I live in Honolulu, Hawaii (Pearl Harbor). My grades (valedictorian), scores, etc.. are great I'm just not too sure about my EC's because its kinda been hard to get really deeply involved in anything since I move every 2-3 years. Hopefully the adcoms will see that and cut me some slack in that department. I've definitely tried to get involved in stuff. I'm big into music and I'm a great Clarinet player, won some regional awards and crap. I'm also really into Philo/Politics. I'm not too sure what I want to major in though...maybe Poly Sci with a Music minor. I'm also interested in Engineering though...w/e I'll decide that once I'm in college.

Essay/Recs:
They're gonna be top notch. For essays some ideas I've had are writing about life as a military kid: moving around, seeing new places, meeting tons of people, moving every 2-3 years...w/e comes to mind. I was thinking about writing about the Philippines relieftrip also since I'm filipino, talk about how seeing so much poverty affected me as a person etc. Obviously I'll go deeper and crap. I haven't put much thought into my essays yet but I've only thought about them for about 5 minutes...lol.

Thanks for your time. Give me some tips on ECs...I still have half a year rofl.

Some other stuff I forgot to include and now its past 20 minutes...ffs.

Band Mentor Sophmore year before I moved, I would've been friggin pres but the military life is just..ugh.

Played in the Rose Parade at Pasadena, California

Not like this matters...but in 9th grade I was really into GAMING rofl and I won about 7,500 dollars + a brand new computer playing BfME2 and CoD2.

I went to a competitive public high school in SoCal for 9-10th grades and I went to a somewhat competitive public high school (not saying much..) in Hawaii for 11-12.

With those scores you have a shot at all of them. They will definitely take into account that your a military kid. Movings ruff and I'm really impressed you've been able to be so involved. Because they're ivies, alot of the selection process is arbitrary. But you definitely will get into most if not all. Congratulations on having such high grades and scores. That's really tough when moving around. Most kids grades drop alot when they move.

VT is a pretty safe pick there, and they have a robust ROTC program.

wow finally someone from the Military Background like me. :) [Dad in the Army though]

You have great chances. Just go ahead and apply!

=] bump 10 char

High test scores, High GPA, unique life story, decent ECs. You have a great shot at all the schools you are applying to. I am a little worried about your teacher recs considering you have not had many teachers that know you well, however I hear recs and interviews are amongst the least important parts of your app...though still reasonably significant. (Like they have to be really bad to do you in...so you are in luck) As for your "Reaches" I only put reach because they are reaches for everyone however I expect you to get into at least 1 if not more of them. Also, consider some schools like Columbia, Penn, and Cornell. GL.

Stanford (SCEA)-Extremely High Reach, don't bother (haha it's just that I'm applying SCEA too so I don't want to you to make me look bad)
Harvard-Reach
Yale-Reach
Princeton-Reach
UC Berkeley-Match
UCLA-Match
Duke-Match
University of Michigan-Safety
Virginia Tech-In with merit
Washington University at STL-Match
University of Washington - Seattle (IN with merit)

Yeah I'll probably apply to Columbia and Penn also. I'm still figuring out where I want to go.

erm...FredFred no offence but Recs are very important part of the app! I mean good recs wont get you in but bad ones can keep you out ;)

PS: I remember inviting you to Class of 2012 thread but I don't any post of yours :p

Yeah my recs will be good =]

Yea, ajayc that's basically what I meant. The recs won't be a big deal if they aren't bad, which they shouldn't be. However, considring he hasn't had teachers for long, I wasn't so sure his recs would be great because he might not have had teachers for long.

Thanks for all the input guys =]

bump 10 char

ll, thanks for your response on my chances thread.

You've got a great shot at all your reaches, as FredFred has already pointed out. Aside from your solid test scores and ECs, adcoms will look upon your peripatetic (hehe) background favorably, especially if you make note of it somewhere on your application. Good luck, and make sure you don't apply Yale SCEA...lol

Stanford is my one true love =]
