Chance a nervous junior? Film..Please.

Wes seems so right for me from everything I read although I know few kids from my school get it...which is always surprising given it is a very well known private NYC school that gets kids into all the Ivy's and such every year. Anyway...I want to study film/cinema studies and here are my stats up to now if anyone would be so kind to chance me.

Current GPA around 3.5...will include 4 to 5 years Honors Spanish and Latin, 3 years Honors Math, AP English Lit this year...double language not required so heavy course load. Expect to pick up AP Calc and US History next year and continue with at least one language.

PSAT: 196. Latest SAT practice tests: about 650 M, 700 CR, 780 WR.

EC's: Will be 5 year Varsity swimmer (should be co-captain next year), selected as Junior Peer Leader, Entertainment Editor school paper since Grade 9, Founder and President, Film Club (new this year). Outside swim club team member. Summer Community service coaching non profit swim camp for kids, 3 years. Two summer internships with finance company specializing in new media...worked on spread sheets, reports, etc..., Summer swim camp at Cornell.

Expect excellent recommendations and can write a great essay...

Will be taking SATII's..at least 3 incl. English LIt, Math, Latin.

Think my GPA may be a little low but I am coming from an extremely competitive school and always take the maximum number of courses offered...that has to count for something, right? Or am I just delusional????

you're not delusional. you just have to apply and take your chances. Wesleyan is a crapshoot for just about anyone from NYC, Boston or Los Angeles.

I feel like every school I like is a crap shoot for film with the exception of Suny Purchase...any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.

First off, take everything anyone tells you (myself, included) with an extra grain of salt. And, when I say it's a crapshoot, I'm also saying, that you have a chance. A genuine chance.

Secondly, unless you already have an honorable mention from Sundance under your belt, I wouldn't necessarily sell myself as a film major. At Wesleyan, that's like saying, you want to be an English major. You can mention it -- even, write a great essay about it. Just don't expect them to offer you red-carpet treatment on that basis alone.

And finally, people differ over how much being a team captain can affect the adcoms. I think it makes a difference. But, after seeing what happened to Classicalguitar (who was actively recruited this year during EDI), I have to temper that somewhat. My hunch is that sports like swimming, rowing, and track tend to have a higher academic cut-off than other sports. So, try to get that Math score up a bit.

I hope this helps. And again, no one has a crystal ball here; if it were up to me, everyone on CC would get in! :p

Thanks...I am hoping that my starting the school's first film club will be helpful..I am not looking to be a film maker but want to study and analyze film as well as screenwrite...maybe. My essays/reports in film class have been very well recieved and my next project will be on the work of Sophia Coppola...here's hoping.
