Chance a nervous Junior?

Ahh reading CC makes me feel horrible lol. My stats are average, EC's are not so great, plus I'm Asian.

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I: March SAT (first time): 2110- 640 CR, 740 M, 730 W (11E). Retaking in May to hopefully boost CR to 700+ and superscore 2200+
[] SAT II: 700 Bio M, 730 Math I. <- probably wont send those. Taking Math II and Physics in June. Expecting 750+ on both
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Here's where I suck, but have an upward trend. Really messed up my freshman year :( Frosh: 3.2. Soph: 3.96. 1st semester of Jr: 3.96.
[] Weighted GPA for Frosh + Soph: 3.64. School gives a 4.3 for A+, and 5.0 for 100+ in Honors/AP classes, but otherwise does not weigh.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School does not rank, but is pretty competitive (according to Collegeboard, the avg GPA for my HS is 3.31)
[] Total Honors/AP Classes taken by the end of Jr year: 8 Honors, 1 AP, and 2 Accelerated. My school offers a lot of Honors/APs so schedule is not very demanding :\ I hate excuses, but part of this is due to schedule conflicts
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): Not offered
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, AB Calc, AP Micro, AP Government, AP Language and Lit, AP Stat, Latin IV Honors
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Latin Exam - Silver (Maxima cum Laude) Level II
[/ul]
Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars:
-Volunteer at a senior residence center for Alzheimer patients for 2 years
-Varsity Tennis, Captain of JV 10th grade.
-6 years of Piano. Play piano for senior residence as part of my community service (below)
-Sports editor assistant and writer for school newspaper
-National Honors Society (running for VP)
-Some unimportant clubs I probably wont mention, such as Key Club (just a volunteer)
[] Summer Activities:
Between 9th-10th: Mathematical Modeling and Introduction to Logic at CTY
Between 10th-11th:
-5 week internship at Harvard Medical School doing research
-2 day shadowing of a world renowned cleft doctor
Between 11th-12th (upcoming): Cornell Summer College for 3 weeks
[] Essays: Adapting to America on my own at the age of 9. Parents are separated and I live with my mom. When I moved to America with her, she was a workaholic, so I had to adapt to America and learn the language on my own (is this a significant enough challenge to be writing about?)
[] Teacher Recommendation: My Latin teacher and Chem teacher. Both should be good
[] Counselor Rec: Should be good
[] Additional Rec: Maybe one from my piano teacher
[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State: NY
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)..
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: 100,000-200,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. Immigrant? lol
[/ul]
Applying to: (listed from highest interest to lowest interest)[ul]
[]Cornell - CAS. (maybe EA/ED?)
[]UC Berkeley - Dad lives in Cali, so I can pay instate tuition if I get in and move to CA before I turn 18
[]UCLA - ^^
[]UPenn
[]UChicago
[]John Hopkins University
[]Brandeis University
[]BC
[]SUNY Binghamton
[li]Probably will find 2-3 more colleges, but this is it for now[/li][/ul]
Additional Comments:
I'm just afraid that nothing on my application stands out. I think the essay and rec's will either make me or break me for Cornell

Anything else I forgot, please let me know. Thanks!

2 more things:
-200 PSAT
-Will be applying for financial aid except for the UC’s

If you apply ED to Cornell and can bring up the SAT to a 2200, I would say a great chance.

Thanks!

Let me know if you want me to chance you back

bump. 10char

bump 10char

Well, it depends on your essay. If you didn’t know English at all and mastered the language completely when you first went to America then write about it in your essay, because it will not only show that you have great character that can handle hard work but also make for your not-so-high CR.

If this is the case, then your situation will work to your advantage and I would say Cornell would be a low/mid reach (as well as if you bring your SAT up to 2200+ individual, last time I checked Cornell doesn’t superscore).

Thanks. I talked to my counselor and she did say that since English is my second language colleges will be more lenient towards my CR score.

Yeah Cornell doesn’t. 2200+ has always been the goal. I still miss too many long passage questions despite lots and lots of practice :(

your academics may be a bit lacking but your extra curriculars are otherwise excellent
work on your sats!

haha I don’t think my EC’s are “excellent”, but thanks. Yeah I’m definitely striving for a 4.0 UW this year

Yeah, like the others say, if you apply ED you have a great chance at Cornell. One thing that stuck out was the upward trend in your grades and I’m sure colleges will like that. Also for your essay, make sure you write about an EC you are VERY passionate about rather than just listing them. GL!

What about my chance at College of Agriculture and Life Science instead of Human Ecology? About the same?

Cornell - a reach, but I think you have a great shot if you choose to do ED and you can bring your CR score up over 700
UC Berkeley - very reasonable match
UCLA - match or low match
UPenn - reach
UChicago - reach
Johns Hopkins University - match
Brandeis - low match
BC - match
SUNY Bing - safety, but I wouldn’t have this be your only safety unless you are in state

remember to apply to uchicago ED b/c it is nonrestrictive…at my school everyone, including the Chinese Val. w/36 ACT, got screwed over in RD admissions (waitlisted/rejected)

Thanks! And since I’m naturally a pessimist, how would my chance be if I dont break 700 on CR?

Let’s just say you should really try to break 700, or else you will have problems getting into a lot of these colleges, especially conisdering you are asian.

Without 700+
Cornell - high reach/reach -go early decision
UC Berkeley - low reach
UCLA - high match/match
UPenn - high reach/ reach- again ed would be necessary
UChicago - reach- non restrictive EA
Johns Hopkins University - high match
Brandeis - match
BC - match
SUNY Bing - safety

With 700+
Cornell - low reach
UC Berkeley - high match
UCLA - match/ low match
UPenn - reach
UChicago - low reach
Johns Hopkins University - match
Brandeis - low match/ safety
BC - low match/safety
SUNY Bing - safety

good luck!

thanks! I think I’m actually improving on the CR with a new method lol. We’ll see

And any comments on my possible essay?

I know this is was ages ago, but if any other potential applicants are reading this, know that below a 700 CR or 2200 SAT is not a deal breaker. I just got accepted with a 670 CR, 730 math and 730 writing (2130). Give it a shot!
