I just finished submitting my applications and am nervous about my low math SAT score. Here are my stats:

SAT: Writing 800 Crit Reading 740 Math 640
SAT Subjects: Literature 780 US History 710
GPA: 4.75 Weighted
Rank: 8 out of 275 (top 3% at a competetive private school)
I took AP Biology as a sophomore and AP Chemistry as a junior. I took AP US History I as a sophomore and AP US History II as a junior. I have taken all available honors course at my school. Currently, I am taking AP Psychology, AP European History, AP Calculus AB and AP Literature.
4 on AP Bio test
4 on AP US History test
(Did not report my AP Chem score because it was LOW.)
Captain of my cross-country team.
Varsity Winter and Spring Track
Homeroom Representative (My school's version of Student Council) all four years of high school.
Volunteer about 5 hrs a week and even more in the summer for The Jerry Leary Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping needy kids in my area.
Was an active volunteer and High School Representative for the Obama Campaign.
Write editorials on politics and articles on XC/track for my school paper.
Attended Georgetown University's weeklong program on Politics and Public Affairs this summer.
Member of the National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society and a National Merit Semifinalist. Recieved my high school's Scholar Athlete Award last year.
My essay is about the time I had to perform in front of the school at a pep rally. I think its pretty rad. My personal statement is about my passion for cross-country and how I was afraid I would be called a loser for being a runner when I was a freshman but now understand its more important to do what you love than to be 'cool.'
My teacher and counselor reccomendations are pretty good, as far as I know. My AP US history teacher said the reccomendation she wrote for me is one of the best she's ever written.
I get all A's and A+'s in my subjects, except science where I've gotten B+'s every year.

Here are the schools I applied to:

Georgetown (early action)
George Washington
American
Washington and Lee
Boston College
Boston University
Northeastern
Drexel
Villanova
Dartmouth
Brown
Bates
NYU
Emory

What do you think my chances are at these schools despite my subpar math score? Since I'm applying as a PoliSci major do you think it makes less of an impact?

PS: G-town is my top choice. I was deferred early action so I sent in a letter explaining why I really want to go there and an additional reccomendation from my high school's assistant principal who is also my AP Psychology teacher. I saw it and it is basically a rave, talking about how in forty years of teaching at my school I am one of the most talented individuals he has ever met. Do you think this will help my chances in regular decision?

Essentially you have a 1380 as most don't consider writing. As you know, that will make the ivies very tough. The Gtown deferral was a good read for their peer schools.

I think you'll get into most on your list less selective than Gtown.

It depends what you're going into. I'm assuming you're doing something either in English or political science/ social studies because of your strengths and relative expertise in those areas -- assuming you're not going to try engineering or something like that (I can't blame you, I'm not going into it either despite pressure from my family). Yes, the Ivies can be tough, but I think you will get into most of the schools on the list (as long as your essay is good, as you're pretty confident in it). Technically your math score isn't that low, depends on who's looking at it of course (like a local school wouldn't care).

Good luck!

(And chancing back would be appreciated. I'm the one titled "Chicago, Harvard, or Yale" or something like that).

Don't fret about being deferred at G-town. Top schools like that defer many, but later admit them in the reg pool. I would say you have excellent chances for that.

You look good. SAT scores are a little low but hopefully that won't kill you. It seems that everybody on this site got deffered by Georgetown. Also what is AP US History II? Maybe its just skipping my mind but I don't know anything about it. Anyway you should be contenders at all of the schools.

Hmom, all of the school beside Gtown I applied to look at the writing according to CollegeBoard. And my school does a two year long AP US course, so thats what that is. Thanks everyone, keep them coming- I'll chance back!

From the looks of it, I would categorize it the following way:

Georgetown (early action) - high match/low reach
George Washington - if it's st. louis, then reach. If not, match/safety
American - not sure. But i'm guessing low match
Washington and Lee - in
Boston College - match
Boston University - in
Northeastern - in
Drexel - in
Villanova - match
Dartmouth - reach
Brown - reach
Bates - don't know too much. sry
NYU - match
Emory - high match

Your application is quite strong, except for that Math SAT. But.. it can be overlooked and I believe that it will be. Best of Luck!

I'd say Georgetown is a low reach. I was also deffered, as was everyone else from my school who applied. So you're not alone there.
Brown and Dartmouth are almost never sure things.
But match to low reach at the rest.

(My thread is still on the front page. Title says something about lacking EC's)

honestly dude i think your statistics are great and you should get into most of those schools...idk about gettin accepted after deferral at georgetown but you still have a chance....chance me....my sats are way lower than urs...

Can anyone give me any personal opinions on Washington and Lee? I am kind of interested in that school, as far as I know it is a pretty good school, but I don't know any more about it than from what I've learned from researching.

Washington and Lee--
I have a friend that goes there. She is very interested in politics and very driven to succeed in a career. She says that if she wants to work on the East Coast, Washington and Lee can provide her with the best career prospects. It is a rather small school, I heard someone say he got claustrophobic, but some people excel in that environment. We are from California, and I don't know where you are from, but apparently it is very different-- very preppy. She really likes the academics, but feels that the atmosphere is a big transition. She is not a big partier, and Washington and Lee is known for its hard liquor. So, while looking for a close, fun, Christian group, she did not find her niche. Yet, many people love Washington and Lee. It is amazing academically; however, I think it all depends on how you want your college experience to be socially. Research it... it might be perfect for you! :)

You are an excellent student and seem like an interesting person also, don't let one semi-low test score be a stigma for you.
That said, I think you have a good shot, not a great one, but it's not impossible.

I think that your grades are stellar and extracurricular activities are balanced. If you're putting so much emphasis on one low test grade, that is silly. I don't think that colleges care testings as much as they do about grades and about essays, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. But I think in the long run, I think a lot of it also has to do with your high school. For example, I go to a private school in CA and my school has very good ties with USC but not so good ties with BC. So, BC is looked at as a school that is waaay harder to get into, but in reality, USC is. So, your school's ties, your college counselor's advocacy, and your recommendations are what could put you over the edge. Also, the difficulty of your intended major and what schools within the universities could make a difference.

Georgetown- usually pretty ambiguous as to who they choose, but I think it's a possibility
George Washington- in
American- in
Washington and Lee- most likely
Boston College- most likely
Boston University- in
Northeastern- in
Drexel- no idea
Villanova- in
Dartmouth- possibly
Brown- possibly
Bates- no idea
NYU- most likely
Emory- possibly

Georgetown (early action) - Honestly, it doesn't seem too out of reach for you. You have good other scores. Nobody is perfect, and the score really isn't too bad. I'd say its a match, if on the slightly higher end.
George Washington - safety
American - safety
Washington and Lee - don't know it, sorry
Boston College - lower match
Boston University - lower match
Northeastern - safety
Drexel - don't know it
Villanova - don't know it
Dartmouth - Ivies are, I've heard from many people, more score oriented. I'd say its a reach.
Brown - Brown (I've heard) has been getting a bit less score oriented, and you have good ECs, but also its also a harder Ivy to get in than Dartmouth. But maybe.
Bates - don't know it
NYU - you should be fine here
Emory - don't know it
