Applying Regular Decision for Class of 2013.

It's hard to guess what your chances are, since we don't have any context for your GPA. Is it weighted or unweighted? How do you rank within your class? Your high school may have a rigorous curriculum, but have you taken the most advanced courses possible? How many honors and/or AP classes?

Your standardized test scores put you below the average for BC's admitted students, and being a white male from NY doesn't help either. But you do have much more work experience than the usual applicant and some ECs with leadership (although playing in band concerts if you're a member of a band is not exactly an accomplishment, lol!).

It may all depend on how BC views your academic performance in high school.

To respond to everything at once, I would like to stress the rigor of my school in all of its aspects just so you could maybe get a better idea about my application. We are #22 in America, GPA for all classes are weighted only because even the non-honors classes are like honors classes at most schools. AP classes are offered only to the kids who have averages in the upmost halves of the 90's in a subject, you can't just sign up for them. There is no ranking because the lowest person would still be the smartest kid in a regular public school.

Colleges supposedly take my school's rep into big consideration, and roughly 10% makes it into ivies and our 190 students last year got 17.5 million in scholarships.

I don't wish this to be an excuse for any poor stats but I just want to make sure you know :)

Haha and yeah I know I'm not bringing any diversity lol.

And regarding band, I am first seat first chair in an advanced band class that won two state medals

I know my GPA still seems a little low to most people, but thats not what I'm worried about because the colleges will most likely understand. If my SAT's are low than that would suck, but I checked BC and it says im on par so I don't understand how I'm below average!

Thanks for responding worried_mom and any further help would be appreciated!

I'd say slight reach based on your test scores. Assuming your grades will look good to admissions people w/in the context of your school and classes, even then I believe it'll be tough. No matter how great your ECs and grades/course rigor may be tests still matter. Good luck though.

Your SAT score of 1940 is below average for BC, which is why several posters have said it might be a reach for you based on that score. According to the 2007-08 Fact Book (most recent available), the mid-50% range composite SAT scores for freshmen are 1910 - 2110, so you are near the lower end of that range. As for individual scores, your math and CR scores are indeed "on par" (BC's range for math is 630 - 720 and for CR is 610 - 710), but your writing score may really hurt you, since it puts you under the 25th percentile. (The mid-50% range for writing is 620 -710).

i really doubt that the fact that you go to this supposedly better school will help you that much. your scores seem slightly lower than normal, but you have good ec's so its probably a slight reach. i'm pretty sure they won't look at your highschool and give you leighweigh b/c of the school's ranking or awards. My highschool doesnt rank either or thats what they tell the students but ao's will most likely look at lowest gpa and highest gpa compared to your own. its not too fair to judge a persons gpa based on if they attended some rigorous private school, many students have to work even harder in public schools to get good grades where not everything is just handed to them. but besides my little rant haha, you seem to have a decent shot.

I realize my scores are a little low but here's hoping!

And jessicab23 my school is a public school lol its just a specialized school. You may have seen us on Saturday Night Live with the sloths or giraffes skits lol

and I wasn't downplaying any public schools i was just making sure that was including in you guys' judging of me!

i just put all of your stuff in on collegedata dot com. you got a pretty high "maybe", but again, it's all pretty arbitrary. at my school we've had essentially identical candidates apply and only one gets in. best of luck though!

"There is no ranking because the lowest person would still be the smartest kid in a regular public school."

Alright buddy lets not get ahead of ourselves, you go to staten island tech which most certainly does not have an andover or exeter difficulty level. Second you have an act of 28 and an sat of 1330 to say that you would be the smartest person in a public school, based on the statement above, is laughable. Have you seen schools up in westchester or long island like greeley/scrasdale. I have a 33 act and there are a least 10 students in my class of 133 students, from a public school in westchester, mind you who have higher scores.

i think you could have a chance mainly because of all the EC's :) maybe u could retake the SATs and try to bring em up :)

i was wondering.. how do 190 students get a collective scholarship of 17.5 million!?!? thats like 90 000 each? is that over 4 years or per year? if its over 4 years, then ok i can see it, but otherwise its like basically impossible?

I assume he means collective between all the schools the students apply to? At graduation, the ceremony program has a list of all the TOTAL scholarship money each student receives. I got 66k (over 4 yrs) from a safety school, and I expect about 100k more (over 4 years) between my other 2 safeties, so I can see how they could easily have 90k/student.

Miktau this is a chances thread so keep your comments to yourself. My school is ridiculous and I'd put it against any school any day. Like I said we are top 22 in the country. I was making a point about the rigor of my school.

And yes, Im not too sure but I'd assume JR526 is correct in how they do it, which for 190 kids isnt too shabby. I heard schools many times the size don't get that much

Alright bdmet2491, let's relax. Miktau has a valid point. Now, I am sure that your school is WELL above the average high school, and it is impressive that it is ranked #22. But keep a few things in mind. First of all, ranking isn't everything. They are not always true to what is "best." Secondly and probably most importantly, your school ranks #22 among PUBLIC high schools. Now, there are multitudes of amazing public schools, and I am not trying to discredit them. BUT, you need to remember than for every public school, there is a private counterpart. Of the top 500 high schools in the U.S., 453 of them are PRIVATE (per of your beloved U.S. World News and Report). So, your school may be #22 of public schools, but there are at least a solid few hundred better private schools that best even the top public school.

Miktau made a good point. Phillips Andover or Phillips Exeter are two of the top in the country. They are harder to get into then most colleges. And those are only two of the hundreds like them throughout the country. (I live on the North Shore in MA and I can name at least ten of them including Andover, Exeter, Tilton, Chote, Kimball, New Hampton, etc.)

So don't be so defensive, he is just making a point. I'm sure you high school is great, but there are other out there too.

I have always been proud of BC admissions for the fact that they don't put too much stocks into standardized testings. They try very hard to get students who are interesting and who can bring something different. I am sure your musical skill will be a plus. You can check admitted posts from years before to see that many students who were admitted have good, but not spectacular SAT scores and some rejected students have ridiculously high SAT.
