Chance a new yorker for a boston spot!

Anyone else? I'd be happy to chance back!

i find it so funny how people, when they have low GPAs like 3.5-3.7, they say they took the hardest classes or say that their school is a crazy competitive public school. there are people who still get 4.0 in those circumstances. if i were an Adcomm, i would view those as lame excuses.

Even though the way the OP first put it wasn't really great, he is right leoris. If you go to a top school, the ADCOM will understand, because most schools have regional officers that now each school well.

But, his SAT scores are still low, but that isn't an excuse.

If your SAT score was higher I think that it would make up for your GPA.
I would just think that if your school is so hard you might have scored a little higher.
Who knows though, you have a low shot, by it's still a shot.
Wait a month and a half and see

"I don't wish this to be an excuse for any poor stats but I just want to make sure you know"

Please read everything before passing judgment leoris! Thank you!

And thanks for chancing me and for your honesty!

You are right there are people who get As in tough schools but speaking as someone who goes to an academically rigorous school, they do not grade on a curve and I have been in AP classes where nobody got an A, I have received the highest grade on a midterm and it was an 82. My SAT score is 1440, 2110 respectively and I think I will have a tough time getting into BC because of my gpa. My school doesnt rank and while I am taking a lot of AP classes, this whole weighted and unweighted thing escapes me.

I say, you never know what a college is going to weigh for or against, I am hoping it will be the whole picture and whether if you fit into their ballpark, your bio fits into what they need for a specific slot.

doonvan- I hope you get in. A 1440 is awesome & it sounds like your school is pretty tough.

bdmet, i think you need to get over the fact that you go to such a tough school. If your statement about how any student at your school would be the smartest kid at any other school was true then you would have much better test scores. Stop being so defensive and accept others judgements. Don't dismiss what they say just because you disagree. And honestly, i think you might not get in because of your test scores/lack of an identifiable difficult courseload. Say what you want, but only 2 APs is well below average for BC.

Colleges usually know what GPAs are good for different schools. so don't worry they will evaluate your stats fairly. I think you have a good chance, i managed to get in EA and my stats are on the lower end? It might be easier to get in this year since the number of applicants has dropped a little. just for your comparison here are my stats. if i can get in i bet you can

GPA 4.284 on a 5 point scale ≈3.4 on 4 point scale
Rank 29 out of354
SAT 710m / 640v / 580w
SAT Subject Tests: Math 1 (690); US History (620)
AP/College Credit: US History (score 4), 3 AP courses and 5 University of Connecticut college courses senior year (2 courses overlap)
Academic Awards, Honors, Recognition:
• CAPT Honor Roll (Connecticut Academic Performance Tests)
• Graduation Honor Usher
• High Honors
• National Honors Society
• Sociedad Honoraria Hisp

Thanks not organized!! Great stats! And doonvarn it seems like you are in the same boat as me except you've got a little bit better stats, good luck to you

And cohen, I respect your opinion and I haven't dismissed what anyone has said, I was just clarifying about the school rigor, that's all. I can disagree with someone without dismissing what they say.

They only offer AP's to the upper tier students, so they're very difficult to get into. But I know my stats are a little on the lower end =/

The one thing I have figured out at this point is to just not sweat it. I will go somewhere. If it isnt one of my best choices, I can always work my ass off next year and try and transfer to BC or Northwestern. At this point, we have done everything we can so I am just going to relax. My worst nightmare is getting into the college of my first choice and not getting the financial package that will let me attend. I am really worried about the credit crunch. I dont mind going into debt to finance my education, the worry is finding someone to lend me the money.

"Miktau this is a chances thread so keep your comments to yourself."

seems like dismissal to me. All i'm implying is that you gotta put past the fact that you go to a difficult school. BC is not gonna focus on your school, they're gonna look at you and although you're middle of the road in SAT, you have to show that you actually had a difficult courseload. they are going to examine YOUR stats and what YOU have done in high school.

Do you really think that colleges don't look at schools. I mean take New York City. If you have a GPA of 3.7 from Stuyvesant versus a 3.7 from Aviation high school, I would say it is a heck of a difference. You could get a GPA of 3. from aviation for just showing up.

I think colleges are pretty familiar with most high schools and take into account the rigor or ease of an educational program. I also have to admit, as rigorous as my school was, I could have done a lot better if I hadnt slacked off in the first two years of high school.

i'm not saying they don't. i'm saying they don't base their decision on how tough of a high school you went to.

Well cohen Miktau was being disrespectful and was making nasty comments, so I felt the need to remind him.

They don't base their decision on the school you go to, but it is a big factor in their decision for many of the reasons doonvarn mentioned

Does BC admit lots of students from your HS....if so what kind of students are they... very involved, great EC's etc. Perhaps you should consider those factors as well. Do the admitted students attend ?

If your school subscribes to Naviance you can do a scattergram of all the kids who have been accepted in your school.

Yes my school has Naviance, this is the stats we have for BC
Class Apply Admit Enroll
2008 36 18 1
2007 26 13 0
2006 29 12 3

The SAT for average applied from my school is 1324/1927

Looks to me like you have a pretty good shot. BC accepts 50% of the applicants from your school, better than their overall average.
