'Chance' a Parent......

<p>I posted this on the Parent section as well....</p>

<p>My time on CC has made it obvious that things have changed drastically from the era when I applied to college. So, I was thinking...how would I do in the application process now compared to how I did in 1986?</p>

<p>Here is my profile from the fall of 1985, applying to colleges:</p>

<p>Male, white, middle class, upstate NY (near Albany)
Small (almost rural) public high school, rarely sent top grads to elite colleges
Rank #1/104 (...and that was 3 towns combined !!)
AP courses : 0 !!! Not offered. I did take the most 'rigorous' classes- NYS regents.
Sports: Varsity soccer 9, 10; varsity football 11,12 (co-captain)
UWGPA: 4.0 (or dang near)
SAT: M 730, V 610 (never even knew you could take a 'prep course' or that you could retake the SAT...)
I took some subject tests, but I cannot recall them, except Spanish 680
Extracurriculars: weak...Spanish Club 4 years, President 12, took educational trip to Spain in 10th grade. Sports as above. Partying with friends.
I worked 20 hours per week starting in 10th grade at a retail store.
Letters of rec: Should be very good...teachers tended to like me despite my sarcasm......</p>

<p>So, get in your Way Back machine....chance me THEN and NOW for these schools: </p>

<p>Harvard, Brown, U Penn, Georgetown, WPI, SUNY-Stony Brook</p>

<p>Also, parents, add your own ‘chance’ thread and stats…if you dare…</p>

<p>I am not going to mess with the SAT re-centering, and will take the scores at face value.</p>

<p>THEN:
Waitlisted/Rejected: Harvard – Back then, I have to imagine that Harvard would not have accepted anybody with this sort of profile, but I could be wrong
Accepted: Everywhere else, though I’m not so certain about Ivy’s</p>

<p>NOW:
Rejected: Harvard, Penn, Brown, Georgetown – Too few great ECs and lower scores, but on the bright side, you did take the toughest schedule, so I’m not so confident with this. Possibly at least one waitlist?
Accepted: WPI and Stony Brook</p>

<p>I’m curious where you ended up back then though.</p>

<p>You would have to recenter the SATs to make a fair assessment, but Im not sure how to convert the old SAT to the new SAT.</p>

<p>Here’s a link to recentering individual scores. </p>

<p>[SAT</a> I Individual Score Equivalents](<a href=“http://professionals.collegeboard.com/data-reports-research/sat/equivalence-tables/sat-score]SAT”>Higher Education Professionals | College Board)</p>

<p>According to wiki, people taking the SAT before 1995 could add 70 to CR and 20-30 to M to get today’s rough equivalent.</p>

<p>EDIT: or you can use the official one below</p>
