Chance a Person with No Confidence!

I really am unsure if I can get into UMD, people say I could, easily, but I'm so unsure! So please chance me and set me in to reality!

Race: African-American (Literally, first generation, parents from Nigeria)
Residency: In-State

UW GPA: 3.76
W GPA: 4.0 (if calculated right)
[Not including first quarter of my senior year]
Rank: School Doesn't Rank

Stray question, the UMD application asks for my GPA, do I give them unweighted or weighted?

My grades have an upward trend. Final GPA for each year is (Weighted)..
Freshman: ~3.55
Sophomore: ~4.00
Junior: ~4.35 (Straight A's all year!)

SAT:
May 2011:
1910 Combined
660 R 570 M 680 W

June 2011:
2020 Combined
670 R 610 M 740 W

ACT:
September 2011: 28 (First and only time)

APs:
AP Lang: 5
AP Psych: 4
AP World: 3
Taking AP Calc BC, AP Human Geo, and AP Lit this year. 6 APs in total.

ECs:

Video Game Club (Pertinent to my essays)
Model UN
Church Youth/Volunteer Activities
Studying Japanese/Korean
(Not that strong :P)

Other Stuff:
Was always in honors and honor roll, etc.
Got awards for...
Excellence in AP English Language
AP Scholar

I've organized a youth excursion for my Church and I manage my Art Club's website. I didn't mention this in my essays or resume because I wasn't sure it was important.

According to my AP Lang/Lit teachers, I write strong essays, so I needn't worry about that. Got Recs from my best teachers.
So what are my chances? What about Honors?
Thanks in advance!

I think you’re in!

Sent from my iPhone using CC

Thanks! Makes me confident.
Still need more input from others though :P.

SATs are a bit low compared to the average, but everything else you’ve done will make up for it. I think your good!

I don’t like bumping, but I need more input!

if u just looked at their averages you are already a shoo-in…

plus you are a urm

100% chance that you get it

I agree–you most likely will be accepted!

Thank alot! My moral is up and I think I can get in!

Honors is another thing though… :frowning: Being an URM might help me there… unlikely though.

Sorry about this necropost, but Ive got a problem… I calculated my UW GPA wrong! Its actually 3.83 but I told UMD 3.76! I gave them my weighted, which is calculated correctly as 3.96 but told them the wrong uw gpa.
They have my transcript which only shows my weighted. Will they recalculate my UW GPA and/or will this affect my chances?
Here are my brief stats:
1280/2020 SAT; 3.83 UW 3.96 W; InState; African Male

ddude. you obviously know youre getting in. chill

You give comforting words but I do legitimately believe I might be rejected or deferred. UMD is my top so I’m really stressed about every little thing.

Dude i know exactly how you feel. I have about the same stats as you, but a little less EC. Everyone’s been telling me not to worry, and that I will totally get in. But my rational side is telling me that its gonna be so much harder for me since im asian and i have a higher standard. But i think you’ll get in. An African American with your stats is really good (not to be racist, just saying from what i’ve heard).

But yeah i’m even more scared now since i got my senior first semester grades. And lemme tell you…they are horrendous. But nothing i can do about it now. hopefully MD doesnt really care too much about that tremendous drop.

@nuplex, you’re going to get in, i’m almost sure of it

@Falcon5
Same. If you’re accepted, as long as your grades don’t atomic bomb (Such as GPA going from say, 3.8 to 2.9) you shouldn’t be worried.
And your not being racist. As an African, I do have better chances at getting accepted, and I even have a better shot at honors, because from what I’ve seen from last years’ acceptances, very few black/African males apply and the pool is much smaller.
Asians are held at a higher standard while blacks are at a lower (Though I’m literally African(Nigerian)-American, but I might as well be grouped in Black).
It’s institutionalized and I hate it (I got in because I’m African) and love it (I got in!) too.

Anyway, I see my stats and think “not good enough.” Why does UMD have to be the only school that takes forever to give a decision?! It’s so stressful.

It’s not too bad. Two of colleges my daughter applied to will send out their decisions at the end of March.
