At National Portfolio day the rep from Wash U told me she thought my portfolio would be very competitive for WUSTL's 1 annual full-ride scholarship for art majors so that's also something to mention.

WUSTL is my dream school but I'm getting a bit uneasy about my chances, so I thought I'd ask here! I will chance back with my limited knowledge!

you will get in

Random note:

I don’t believe it’s called Graphic Design anymore - it’s Communications Design (which used to be VisCom… you think they could settle on a name already).

Not that it makes any difference, since it’s essentially the exact same.

Ah, yeah I know I just forgot what WUSTL referred to it as. All these universities call it different things! (graphic design, communication design, advertising design…etc) And wow that’s an awesome answer, thanks!

Speaking from experience (2 kids in the Sam Fox School, one of whom is CommDesign major), if WU is your first choice and you can afford to pay full freight, apply ED; your chances are outstanding. You would still be eligible for the scholarship you mentioned. Even if you don’t apply ED, I think your chances are strong.

your SATs are below average for the norm at Wash U but I’d say you have a better chance than I do and I’m applying to Sam Fox ED for Comm Design. I sure hope that you’ve let Wash U how much you want to go to their school. I was there this summer for 5 weeks for their Portfolio Plus Summer Program and Sam Fox is quite awesome and one of the faculty members wrote one of my recs. Maybe we’ll see each other in the fall.

I know my SATs are on the lowish side but I’m hoping my GPA, courseload, recs and portfolio can make up for that.

I’m not sure I’ve done the most that I could have in letting them know. I talked with a rep for about an hour at NPD and I told her Wash U was my #1 and she took down my information and we’ve emailed back and forth. I’ve been recieving a lot of literature from them, but I’m not sure what that means. And, of course, I’m going to be sending in my portfolio for the art scholarship.

Your 5 week thing definitely gives you a leg up! Did you get a lot of portfolio work during that summer program? What sort of design work are you into? Are you into traditional art as well?

Do you (or does anyone) know if they consider the quality of a portfolio (that was sent in for the scholarship) in the admissions process? Or do they only consider it if you got in in the first place.

If I’m not mistaken, the portfolio is strictly supplementary so at least it doesn’t hurt to have a solid body of work. As for the summer program, it was set up so I took 1.5 hours of Drawing and 2D/3D design each day and then 3 hours of an elective (mine was Digital Photo). I ended up including several of the pieces I completed in the portfolio I sent them with my early decision application. As for what I like to do, I focus a lot on digital work but I also bust out the Micron pens every once in a while. At Wash U though, your first two years are the same no matter what your major so don’t expect to be in a computer lab for graphic design as a freshman.

Sounds like an awesome summer program!
Yeah I also do a lot of traditional work in addition to my design work, oil and watercolor painting and printmaking, so I’m definitely okay with having core art classes. Plus being skilled in traditional art makes you a better designer in my opinion! The woman I interviewed with at NPD suggested that I make my portfolio half and half traditional and design, so I’m definitely gonna follow that advice
Good luck with your ED I hope you get in! :D

Oh, and apparently there are less than 90 incoming freshman each year in the art school and that makes for some competitive applications. I’m going to be one of them in the fall :]
