Chance a Pre-Med for Top Schools and BS/MD with Low GPA?

@Undecided3494 Just did a quick search for Union AMC. You were right about it being lesser known as it wasn’t even on my list and I thought I hit all the humanities based BS/MD-BA/MD type programs. Is it true they require you to minor in something other than science?

@SATurdays Yes it can be pretty much anything you want outside of science. My dream was always to study history in college and the program allows me to major in Biology but also do some American Studies.

@SATurdays

Keep in mind colleges may take your weighted GPA with a grain of salt, especially if your school has an odd way of weighting. For example:

School A: gives an AP class a whole 2.0 point boost (an A/A+ achieving a 6.0/4.0 GPA) and an honors class a 1.0 point boost (an A/A+ achieving a 5.0/4.0 gpa)

School B: gives an AP class a 0.5 point boost (an A/A+ achieving a 4.5/4.0 GPA), and an honors class the same boost

As you can see, there is quite a dichotomy in this example of a weighted GPA system - hence, why adcoms may take your weighted GPA with a grain of salt.

@Undecided3494 Interesting! I’m not sure about that non science minor but my choice would probably be sociology or political science. Can I ask about your experience with BS/MD, especially with a seemingly random non-medical interest? I ask because I might be partially in the same boat. How did you integrate history into your “story”? Did you end up downplaying it in certain parts of your app?

@yikesyikesyikes Good to know! I assumed most schools (like mine) used the typical 5.0 scale for weighted/dual enrolled classes (and I think for the most part they do) but that variation definitely explains 6.0 and upwards of 5.0 GPAs floating around CC

@SATurdays I was not very smart as a kid and struggled with reading and writing early on. I used to hate reading but loved history so I read history books which led to me improving my reading. I also used to be very bad at writing because I lacked passion, but began to write well when I started writing history papers as I actually had a purpose for my writing. I had always wanted to be a doctor when I was little because my dad is a physician and I liked the respect he garnered and how appreciated he was by his patients plus medicine interested me.
