common app essay: good enough to be deferred by Princeton, so good I guess, but not amazing
peer evaluation: absolutely great =)

how am I looking for dartmouth?

come on y’all~

I’m actually in the same situation (Princeton deferree, applying to Dartmouth, IB diploma candidate).

I think you stand a very good chance of acceptance—I’d put money on it, in fact. In particular, I think your ECs are pretty good and you’re clearly a star in your school… kinda wish I still went to an uncompetitive high school where I’d be a standout.

Best of luck!

As a matter of curiosity, what does IB “Math Studies SL” consist of if it doesn’t include calculus?

"I think you stand a very good chance of acceptance—I’d put money on it, in fact. "
WowZa! That makes me feel pretty good loll

And anyone will tell you IB Math Studies is pretty much the IB math class for kids who absolutely suck at math ~ it covers topics such as statistics, logic, 3D geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and (extremely basic) calculus.

You are correct in being concerned about the CR score.
The first generation college and coming from a school that doesn’t send many folks to schools like Dartmouth are reasons you may stand out in a positive way.
You’ve got a shot.
Good luck!

I’m really nervous about having only a 670 reading, but to put that score into perspective, it’s the highest in my grade…as are the 800, 760, and 34 (including all subscores).

Did your counselor write that in the recommendation or is it listed in the school profile?

I’m actually not sure ~ all I know is she was the one who mentioned it to me (was completely shocked about the reading, not so surprised about the others), so I’m assuming she mentioned it somewhere.

Dm freshman here. Dont go to princeton. Eating clubs < frats.

lolll~ I noticed such differences in all of my interviewers (Harvard, Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton, Macaulay Honors College)
Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were all very stuck up…totally turned me off from the get-go
Dartmouth and Cornell were very laxed and “chill”
Macaulay was definitely not for me loll

Realize I only applied to HYPC(olumbia) because 2 months ago, I was a prestige whore; now I actually want a great undergraduate experience in conjunction with top academics, and I feel a place like Dartmouth (or Cornell) would give that to me. That’s why I want chances from someone like you (metaphy6) who goes to the school and sees what people have done and how they made the school.

Thanks =)

I would sayyou are still a prestige whore if you still aim for the Ivy League. Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Middlebury and many other schools are better than Dartmouth. US News have given more points to Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Carleton, Pomona and Wellesley. Claremont McKenna got the same score as Dartmouth.

I actually did apply to Wesleyan, Williams, Amherst, and Swarthmore. And I could honestly care less about the ivy prestige, however, I do want an ivy-like environment (where people are all as smart if not smarter than I am) in that sense.

There are different methodologies for the two rankings, universities and LACs. If Dartmouth were considered an LAC by US News, it likely would be #1 (or at the very least near the top).

OverbearingDaddy, at what grounds? Perhaps you are correct, but I am more impressed with liberal arts colleges which have fought for there ranking and not just kept their reputation from the 19th to 20th century.

SwedishChris, I am a big fan of LACs and graduated from one of the top ones myself, but IMHO you place too much emphasis on USN&WR and fail to understand Dartmouth and the reasons for its place in their rankings.

Its endowment? Dartmouth affords the best?

Check Forbes ranking which is supposed to be more fair since it leaves reputation out of it. Dartmouth ranks 30th after a lot of good LACs. I am not only looking at the rankings, but they help to prove my point. I have heard so many interesting views on Dartmouth and not all agree with all the great things people say about the school. I applied to Dartmouth as one of my top choices, but I am not sure whether I would prefer it before Amherst, Middlebury, Vassar or even Colgate.

To put the IB into perspective, I got into Dartmouth RD 2016, and my classes were the following:
IB Mathematics HL
IB English A1 HL
IB Physics HL
IB Chemistry HL
IB Spanish Ab Initio SL
IB Economics SL
Theory of Knowledge
and Mandarin.

I am an international student with a 3.85 unweighted, a load of EC’s kinda like yours and my Standardized testing was practically the same (by “yours” i mean ZaZa94’s).

Based on my own success, Ide wager your bound to get in as well, especially if you got the fact that your school’s EC’s are basically upcoming and you are pretty much the head of everything! My only worry is that you have no real ‘hook’ as you are coming from an uncompetitive high school.

But nonetheless, solid shot mate.

Best of luck! PM if you get and and decide to go (i might), or purely out of boredom looking for a conversation or a few bad jokes :D

SwedishChris I would hardly say that LAC’s have “fought” for their ranking simply because a lot of these highly ranked LAC’s are also riding on endowment and prestige. What makes an Ivy great is the students that go there, not just the teachers etc. Student typically seeking that kind of competitive and prestegious environment go there because they know that they will get it. Having visited and been amongst both LAC’s and Ivies, for the more success driven people out there, Ivies are a much better fit, and you cant just call them Ivy whores because they are going for the environment in which they will thrive?! What you said about the rankings is atrociously incorrect as well, as Dartmouth has been ranked as the best undergraduate college and experience for the last 4 years in a row, and currently 11th best overall college in the US (USNews), putting it higher than a lot of the LAC’s you listed.
BTW if you are in for the LAC’s, I highly recommend Pomona, its brilliant, and far outdoes its ‘cousin’ Claremont McKenna. :D
