Also, my ACT essay was rather low. However my SAT essay was relatively high. Will colleges acknowledge that I am still a strong writer. The ACT prompt was about using GPS tracking on children. It was not very "writer-friendly" in my perspective. Do colleges focus heavily upon the ACT essay score? Also, should I submit both tests or just one of them? Thank you

All of your scores are above the averages of Richmond. I just went on a tour on Tuesday, I loved it and it is now one of my top chioces. All of your scores and extracurriculars are above their averages so I think you should be fine. My scores are lower than yours but I have Affirmative Action which will help alot. Only advice is to do some community service because they seem to love that kind of stuff. Good luck fellow SPIDUR

Hello Nova - My daughter will be a sophomore at UR this year. She absolutely loves it and is counting the days until she can move in to her dorm.

With all due respect to nabouls, I don’t think a tour qualifies anyone to say “You Are In”. UR has an acceptance rate in the low 30%'s. I have seen some people on here with outstanding statistics that did not get in. While your scores and stats are in the upper range of the middle 50%, that is only part of the equation. UR is very holistic and looks at the whole person when determining admission offers. Superior academics is a requirement but so is the rest of the picture. nabouls does make a valid point that community service is important. I think they would rather see some devotion to one or two ECs not related to school rather than dabbling in a dozen different things. What you have is great, but is there anything outside of school?

Finally, your essay is very important. Think of the essay as your job interview. This is your one opportunity to sell yourself to admissions. I think my daughter’s essay is what set her apart from the crowd.

I hate the whole “chancing” thing but I understand why a person would want to know how others think they stack up. Unless a person is in the admissions department (which I am not!) they really don’t have first hand knowledge of what happens in there. Don’t let anyone build up your hopes or dash your dreams if they don’t absolutely know what they are talking about. My opinion? You have a very good chance of being accepted but it’s going to be up to you, the quality of the competition, admissions, fate and some luck. I also think that if UR is a clear #1 choice for you in November, you should consider ED. I think that may help.

Best of luck! If you haven’t visited, you should try. It is an amazing place!
