Columbia
Cornell
Ohio Wesleyan
Rutgers
UC Berkeley
Williams
Brown

I will be applying early for Penn during the summer before my senior year, going into the CAS to major in English. I will apply to the other schools through regular decision, majoring in English regardless of the school in question. Here is my information, some of which will be hypothetical goals:

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Bangladeshi (don't know where it would fall on app)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 75,000-100,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Legacy (for Penn)

Thank you!

Honestly, I think you have a good shot at all of those schools! Of course, Ivy League schools are random sometimes, but you seem like a very well-rounded student. Your EC’s are great, your GPA is amazing, and your SAT score should be enough to get you into those schools. You are definitely in at Berkeley, and you have a great chance at the other schools; I don’t know much about Wesleyan, Williams, or Rutgers, but Penn, Columbia, Cornell, and Brown seem like they should be matches for you.

Chance me back?

Bump /-/-/-/-/-/

Definitely agree. I feel like you have a good chance at all of those RIGHT NOW. Of course, you still have Junior and SR year to go, but I am sure you can keep up your hard work.
Feel free to chance me back :)

Bump /-/-/-/-/-

lol @ Honors Gym!

Anyway:
I definitely think you got a shot, especially if you apply early decision to Penn! Your ECs and passions seem somewhat convoluted based on what you wrote here. I would say that you should highlight who you are and what your passions are in your essays. Other than that, your GPA is great. I would consider retaking the SAT for at least a 2250 (I know you can do it, you’re close! I got a 2100 my sophomore year and bumped up 200 points, so you definitely can do a lot better than I can (:). Have you considered entering any competitions? A few awards here and there won’t hurt to boost your app and you’re only a rising junior so you definitely have time.

Best of luck!

Penn (Early Decision) - reach (for anyone)
Columbia - reach
Cornell - low reach
Ohio Wesleyan - low match
Rutgers - safety
UC Berkeley - high match
Williams - low reach
Brown - reach

Your GPA/courses/etc give you a great chance at the Ivies but they still are reaches. I’d say with a 2250+ SAT (and maybe another award or two), Penn would become a slightly lower reach, but ED should really help…I think you have very good chances all around, though!

If you’re into English, maybe try entering the Scholastic Writing Awards competitions? A medal would look great.

chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1358394-chance-humanities-kid-uchicago-brown-lacs.html</a></p>

Good GPA and SAT score. However, the SAT score might not be as competitive for the ivies. Perhaps retake that for a slightly higher score? You don’t have a lot of ECs, but it shows that you are committed to soccer. Definitely play that up in your application. Congrats on getting good recs too!

Penn is definitely plausible with ED and legacy status. it is still a bit of a reach though
Columbia- reach
Cornell - slight reach
Ohio Wesleyan - match
Rutgers - safety
UC Berkley - match/reach (since out of state)
Williams - low reach
Brown - reach

chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1303604-early-decision-chances.html</a></p>

@missjulia423 I do plan on retaking the SATs for a better score, maybe 2250-2300. Thanks for your feedback!

It’s great that you are already thinking about college and what you need to do before you even start your junior year! You are way ahead of where I was when I was going into my junior year. So far, it looks like you have a good chance at these schools, definitely think about retaking your SAT and try a couple more SAT Subject tests.

@JennyLeann thank you for your feedback, I do plan on taking a couple more subject tests.

Bump /-/-/-/-/

Bump, I will chance back!

I will chance back!!

So the fact that you’re only a junior means that any chances we post can be improved on immensely by the time you apply. :)

Basically, your stats are pretty great, so if you keep them that high you’ll be fine. Nevertheless, I suggest that you take SAT again in 2013. For me junior year boosted my score like 200 points too, like another poster said. But 2200 is already pretty amazing so don’t stress too much about that.

Since you have another year, I suggest that you work on defining your passions more through your extracurriculars and volunteering. You said you wanted to major in English so your local library volunteering is pretty good, so maybe expand on that. One of my friends started a non-profit whose aim was to increase the literacy percent in developing countries if you’re interested something along those lines and another one of my friends taught English in a developing country. There are also literary magazines, journals, and newspapers you can submit your work in. Just look at what you’re interested in and make sure you add more depth to it when you apply.

Anyway, you also have legacy status going for you. Right now, I’d say Penn, Columbia, Williams, Brown, and Cornell are reaches (they are no matter what) though you do have good chances, especially if your essays are good and you work on your ECs. UC Berkeley would be a low reach and the other two seem like matches to me!

Chance back please!
