Will I be able to get into this school? Suggestions for improving my chances? I appreciate any advice you may offer.

your stats are well above the avg for UM – you should be fine

Thank you for your reply - I still fear those OOS stats that were presented - about 24% acceptance rate for OOS students…

Even 24% might be generous. You definitely have the qualifications for getting in, even OOS, but with OOS unfortunately you just never know. It’s definitely worth applying, though. Go EA.

yeah, it’s definitely harder for OOS students to get in. it’s by no means a guarantee, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about

You have a really good shot. Just make sure your essay really shows that you want to go to Michigan. Make a connection with the school.

You are a high match for sure.

you’re in  hopefully see u there! :D

Have you run the net price calculator? Financial aid isn’t so great for OOS students…

I know this will be an expensive school for me to attend. Since my mom was a former faculty member at U of M Med School and my dad did a fellowship there, they are very enthusiastic about my application, despite the $$$. They loved U of M, and I hope I have that same opportunity!

Enthusiasm does not equal actual ability to pay… just want you to make sure that they know exactly what the costs look like for OOS for you. You should run the calculator with their help. Your application looks very strong, but you just want to make sure that part is understood as well.

Yes, $$$ is always a concern, since I have siblings (twins) that will soon be applying to college. It sounds like even small merit scholarships are hard to come by from U of M, is this correct?

You should check out the financial aid website, but I think it is harder to get merit aid if you are out of state.

intparent, thank you for your advice. I will check out financial aid website and I will apply for merit scholarship $ from various sources.

you’re correct about merit aid being quite difficult to receive from UM

Michigan is no longer a safety for OOS students, but I like your chances, especially if you apply EA.

You are definitely a match, but I would recommend also applying to Maryland as a safety school. It would not only be a safety school in terms of admissions, but also in terms of costs. Tuition will be about $120K less for four years and although Michigan is certainly a better school, that is an awful lot of money to spend. Plus, you actually would still be going to a big ten school. I’m not saying you should go to Maryland over Michigan, but until you figure out your finances, you should not cross it off your list.

Thank you, MichorPlan2. I am applying to UMaryland - CP, since I do like the school very much. However, I think if my parents are on board for Michigan expenses, and if I am accepted at Michigan, I would prefer Michigan for the strength of its political science program. However, I agree that the cost of attending Michigan is the big question.
