Chance a rising senior

Hey guys, I go to a fairly large public high school in Houston. It is my dream to go to Rice, so it would be helpful if you could tell me my chances.

GPA: 6.87 (on a 6.0 scale, for honor and ap classes an A=7 B=6 C=5... and for regular classes an A=6 B=5 C=4.... regular classes would include Gym and health.)

Rank: 1/711

SAT: 1490/2280 ( 750-Math, 740-Reading, and 790-writing)

SAT II: Chemistry-800, Math level II-800, Bio E- 780

AP scores: World History- 5 , Computer Science-4, US History- 5 , Environmental Science-4 (self studied), Biology-5, Psych-5, English Lang-4, Chemistry-5

Honors: Most of them are school related, but i got 3rd place in chemistry lab, nuclear science lab, and experimental design at a regionals science olympiad competition.
I might get national merit semifinalist, I had a 216.
I will also receive the ap national scholar. I think that is for at least 8 4's on ap tests.

ECs: National Honor Society: vice president, Biology Club: president, and Science Olympiad: Secretary. I also played tennis for a semester in ninth grade if that means anything. I am also a member of SPARKS( a club which assists and throws parties for the special kids at our school)

Community Service: 50 hours at the public library. Volunteered on Thanksgiving( 3 hrs. served food to the homeless).

My senior year classes will be:
AP Physics C
AP Calculus BC
AP english literature
AP Government
AP Economics
Health (1 semester- required)
Gym (1 semester- required)
Honors World Area Studies (a class where there are many discussions about current events and turmoil going on in the world.)

My course selection is one of the most rigorous possible at my school.

I will also be requesting an interview and will be applying early decision. The recommendations I will be getting will be very good... (I think) :) I know the two teachers very well.

Thanks for reading and please chance me for Rice!

Also can u guys tell me if what i can do to improve my chances at Rice.

I would say that your gpa and class rank look good, but you should retake the SAT to boost your 1490 (M+R) to atleast a 1530 to look competitive. Your ECs are a little lacking but if your essay’s are good , I am sure you have a decent chance of getting in. I would put you at 95 percent chance at getting in, if you have good essays.

Thanks , so if i raise my SAT score and write good essays i should expect to get in? Anyone else?

Your SAT scores are already competitive. Unless you think you’re likely to make significant improvements, it’d be silly to waste your time and money retaking them.

I think you’re in excellent shape as long as you make your ECs sound compelling and put effort into your essays.

thanks redseven. I am almost 100 % sure that i can improve my math to an 800 and my reading to a 770. Should i take it again? Can anyone else make any recommendations or chance me?

No problem, and good luck with admissions.

it doesn’t hurt to take it again. you’re competitive as such.

bump. can other people chance me please?

I think you have a good chance! Chance me, please?

@kitkat I think you have a great chance. Your EC’s are very good , but your sat score is not competitive enough. Retake it and aim for atleast a 2100. If u improve your SAT score to that level then you should be guaranteed admission imho.

if it matters to anyone i am asian( more specifically pakistani american)

@kitkat:

You’ll be a competitive applicant with a decent chance if you can improve your SAT scores. You won’t have much of a chance at all with your current scores.

aleeya - Your SAT scores are fine, don’t listen to what others are saying. Sure you could raise them and it would improve your chances, but I would worry about that aspect of your application LAST at this point. You are in the score range to get in.

However, unfortunately you should never expect to get in to Rice. It’s one of the most selective schools in the nation, and is a reach for anyone. At this point work on your recommendations and essays. Make sure you portray yourself as accurately as possible. Good luck!

@ altamash – man, you are in outer space. Since when does an applicant need to “boost” or “improve” a 2280 SAT score… that is the last area an adcom will be concerned about at that level.

everyone thanks for the replies. I have started writing my essays and i am applying ED. Could i do anything until november 1st other than essays to improve my chances of getting into Rice.

No. Just relax and enjoy your time in HS

@aleeya Dont retake anything haha you are more than fine! Just do your best on your application and I’m certain you will be accepted
