Additional Details: I took the ACT without prep, but only got a 29 composite, albeit a perfect math score. That might have been a bad test day, since I did much better on practice tests. But I still think that I would fare better on the SAT. I also think that my guidance counselor and as well as a couple of teachers would definitely be willing to write me letters of recommendation, as I have done well in all of my classes and my guidance counselor will probably check my course load as being "most rigorous." I have not played any varsity high school sport, or committed to playing a musical instrument for more than a year. I have not written my essays yet, but my passion would probably be volunteering and STEM orientated subjects. I do not qualify for QuestBridge as my parents are divorced and my dad is a doctor. I do regularly visit him, and he pays for my phone and internet, but I do not have a car or a reliable means of transportation during weekdays.

I think for the higher range top20 schools like Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, etc, it might be a good idea to get your SAT scores up to 2200+. Other than that, I think you have as good a chance as anyone else, you are competitive :)

I would appreciate it if you gave me some advice too!

All of the florida schools should take you (I’m assuming you’re a resident?)

Georgia Tech/Emory/Vandy/Johns Hopkins are all reach schools

The rest are really tough to chance. I’d say you have a shot, but your recs and your essays could make or break you. You have great ECs, and leadership positions will help a lot. Definitely retake your SATs, but your SAT IIs are great. Good luck!

please help!

Yes, I am a Florida resident. I go to a fairly large public high school, which has sent a few kids every year to top colleges and universities. It’s not a magnet school nor is it insanely hard, but it does have almost 30 AP classes. I would say that it is one of the best in the state, it is near an upper-middle class residential area.

Bump!

I agree completely with awesome nerd. And why are you applying to tons of midsized elite universities and one ~800 student quirky LAC?

Chance back?

You need to improve your test scores for the top schools. On the other hand, there is also nothing outstanding from your EC. Except for the Ivies, MIT and Stanford on the list, you should be fine.

Bump. Near the end of the summer, I shadowed at a regionally ranked hospital for a couple of weeks. It wasn’t that many days, but it was still quite memorable. I only observed a few nurses and internal medicines, no surgeons or anything like that. Also, I retook the SAT in October. My scores are as follows:

Math: 770
Critical Reading: 640
Writing: 710
Essay: 10/12

This brings my SAT score to a blank 2200 superscored. This was my second time taking it, and I don’t think taking it a third time will change anything. On my list, I’ve also replaced MIT with Harvard, not that the admission rate is significantly different.
