bump, bump

BlackRose101, you’re definitely strong in a number of areas. A small note before I go into detail- make sure that when your counselor fills our your school report, he/she indicates on the sheet that students are not permitted to pursue AP/IB /outside college courses prior to the junior year. This will clarify for the admissions panel why you did not pursue these kinds of courses until later on in your high school career.
For your freshman year, your greatest strength lies in Latin III. If this is unique for students within your school, then give yourself an added bonus. If you attend a private school where this may not be uncommon, pursuing Latin III as a freshman may carry less weight; at the same time, the fact that you have maintained a strong GPA (*note: within the context of your school- a 3.54 may not seem strong at first glance, but if this equates to ~93 in your school, this is fine) will definitely help you. All honors courses this year also works in your benefit.
Your two noteworthy classes sophomore year are your honors chemistry course and of course the Latin IV. Perhaps your greatest strength, however, lies in your IB curriculum in your junior and senior years. I am not completely familiar with this curriculum, however, I am aware that the IB curriculum is generally regarded as very rigorous in comparison to others; the fact that you have maintained a strong GPA overall while pursuing these courses will carry greater weight in your application to highly selective schools like Boston College and Cornell. Note on SAT: In regards to your SAT score for these schools, I think if you have the time and resources to do so, you should retake the SAT to try to improve your score. Because you follow an IB curriculum, college admissions officers may also have greater expectations for your standardized test scores. They may expect your scores to more strongly parallel your performance in the IB courses. If you can, do it; if you are not able to retake the test, then focus more on these other elements:
In your ECs: I would emphasize Latin Club. Latin is obviously one of your interests, and you have done well, so why not make this your passion? Selective colleges will be very keen to accept a student who demonstrates a curriculum filled with honors Latin courses and in addition to this, active participation in an extracurricular activity that is pertinent to this language. 4year participation + officer position will also serve you well. Four of your other ECs- the teen writing group, contributor to magazine, lit mag and your blog—deserve exceptional recognition because these are all related to writing; they demonstrate your passion for journalism/communications. The teen writing group also shows a lot of leadership and initiative on your part. I didn’t even see your intended major (journalism/communications) until the end; the fact that you have the ECs above (especially the writing ones) only support your professional goals. You are obviously a dedicated and talented individual, and I think you have a great chance at the schools mentioned above. You also mentioned that you were born in a country outside the U.S., and, if able to, I would expand on my ethnicity in my application, if I were in your position. You may not realize it, but you probably bring a very exclusive perspective to a number of the activities discussed above based solely on your unique heritage and cultural experience. Best of luck to your college admissions process!

^ whoa. Im pretty sure this is the all time biggest chance CC has ever witnissed. its gng down in history. this thing is massive.

u wanna chance me? :)

Thank you for chancing me, thedreamerofoz. I must say that this is one of the mos helpful chances I have ever received.

I did not know that my GC could tell adcoms the coursework of my entire school and the policies. I’ll make sure to ask him to do it.

I will be emphasizing Latin Club in my supplemental essays (because I already submitted my essay, and my activity, which was swimming).
I will also make sure to expand the idea of my cultural experience.

Thank you for your help!

@delmonico, give me a link?

bump, bump

Don’t worry too much about the AP not being allowed, I’m sure colleges know (it’s the norm at a lot of Mass. high schools). I think you should be fine at all schools besides BC and Cornell. I think you have a shot at BC, though. I’m also not 100% sure about Newhouse (I’m assuming you’re applying there), but you’ll get into Syracuse.

Good luck!

You’ll get into all of the schools you’ve applied to thus far. Cornell is a reach, BC is probably a low reach and the other 2 are matches. Good luck! Chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1201569-chances-senior-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

I think you should get into them all. But Cornell is definitely a reach.
Good Luck! Chance me back. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1233331-please-chance-me-following-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks newuser. I am applying to NewHouse, which I know is hard to get into, but i’m ready for the challenge!

Hey dantheman, thanks for the chance. I’ll chance you as well :)

Chanceme, I do not know much about any of your schools. If I were to chance you it would not be accurate… sorry :/

anybody else?

bumpppp :)

bumpppppp :)

Your GPA and SAT score seem a bit low for some of the upper level schools that you mentioned, like Cornell. Your ECs seem decent enough for most of those schools. I’ll try to give chances for the schools that I do know about.

Cornell University-high reach
Boston College-match
Boston University-match
Syracuse University-match
Northeastern-high match
Clark-match

Good luck! Chance me back please (:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1241354-decent-gpa-high-sat-1-weak-ecs.html</a></p>

That seems fair, and accurate. I thought that BC would be a reach, but your opinion helps me look at in different ways.

Thanks :)

Anybody else?
