LASTLY ESSAYS:
My essays are pretty strong. The "longer one" focuses on my business and the second one focuses on teaching martial arts to autistic children. Two Cal readers said that my business one is really strong and stands out.

Let me know my chances. Feel free to be harsh, but I need truthful answers. Really need to know my chances.

What ACT score do you think will give me better chances?

I WILL CHANCE BACK IF YOU'D LIKE ME TO!

Would like to add:

I am rank 54/216

From a descent public school that sends 3-5 students to ivies and about 30 or so students to UCs.

Sorry, but I think extracurriculars matter less to UCs than GPA and SAT. If I’m not mistaken, the order of importance goes like this: GPA>SAT>ECs.
UCB-reach
UCSD-low reach
UCD-high match/match
UCI-high match/match
SF state-in
SJ state-in
Cal Poly-match (engineering there is much more competitive)
UOP-match

Good luck though!

UCs are one of those that place less emphasis on EC’s.

UCB- <1%
UCSD- 5%
UCD- 33%
Cal Poly- 66%
UCI- 66%

Whoa… I thought Berk/Davis/Irvine were more hollistic? Even then they don’t look at ECs? What would be a good ACT score to raise my chances?

Also, do you guys think that I should include my website for my business URL/mention the company name? I’ve asked a bunch of people… 1/2 said i should… so that i could justify that my business exists… 1/2 said that i shouldn’t cause it’s name dropping, and it’s not like they check?

nice EC’s!

Bump it up! Any more chances? Hollistic UCs really don’t look at ECs at all?

They look at ECs after you have acceptable stats. Frankly, you don’t for any UC on your list. You would have a shot at Riverside and Merced, that’s it. Cal Poly SLO is highly unlikely, but the other CSUs look more promising. SDSU probably only if you’re in their service area.

It’s unfortunate that the UCs talk about holistic admission when they are almost purely numbers driven.

Bump it up.

Although GPA and SAT scores are the most important factors, you do have impressive E.C’s. The best thing you can do to improve your chances is to write about your greatest accomplishments in your personal statement and how it will make you prepared for college. A personal statement can go a long way. Your upward trend shows improvement, which UC’s like to see.

I’m not an admissions officer, but I’ve frequently consulted the advice of a former UC Berkeley admission officer. Berkeley is a school that takes the hollistic approach more seriously and has been known to give second chances, and you might have a chance for augmented review, where they ask you for additional information to see if you get admitted. However, It’s a slim chance, even with incredible E.C’s like yourself.

In my opinion:

UC Berkeley: Reach
UC Irvine: Match or Low Reach
UC Davis: Match or Low Reach
UC San Diego: Reach
SF State: Match, most likely in
SJ State: Match, most likely in
CSU Cal Poly SLO: Match
SDSU: Match
University of the Pacific: Match, most likely in

UCB-1%
UCSD-5%
UCD-50%
UCI- 65%
SF state-in
SJ state-in
Cal Poly-depends on the major 15%-70%(engineering to agriculture)

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1246909-chances-cal-poly-ed-engineering-major.html</a></p>

Overall Cal Poly SLO Fall 2010 admitted Freshman stat:

Avg GPA: 3.90
Avg ACT: 29
Avg. 1292 (out of 1600)
% Acceptance: 32%

Sorry to say, given your SAT and GPA, Cal Poly SLO will be a reach for you (high reach if you are doing engineering/architecture). By inference, given UCD/UCI have similar stats, they will be reach too.

In summary,

UCB- very high reach
UCSD - high reach
UCD - Reach
UCI- Reach
Cal Poly- Reach
SDSU- High match
SFSU - match
SJSU - match
UOP- dont know

I go to Cal Poly engineering now, let me know if you have more questions.

Good luck!

Bigger state schools tend to be less holistic in the way they make decisions (more quantitative, but I wouldn’t count any of them out except may UCB/UCSD. However, it seems like you’re a decent applicant and even if you don’t get into them all, you’ll get into a few. Hopefully you can bring up your scores.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1219836-chance-me-uchicago-columbia-yale-georgetown-more-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Any more chances?

bump it up.

I’ll be honest, I know very little about the UC system. Berkeley and SD, as much as I know about them, are probably your two reach schools. Davis and Irvine are probably in that ballpark as well. University of the Pacific I know a bit about and your stats are on target for them. I’d be surprised if you didn’t get in there.

The positives, you have a clear upward trend which will be looked on favorably, but you need to boost your SAT scores, especially if you’re going into engineering or business.

You seem to have put a LOT lot lot of effort into your EC’s, which are very focused, and that’s good. But how those schools prioritize those, I’m unsure of.

Good luck to you! You’ll get in somewhere :).
