Chance a singaporean international student!

Hi guys please offer me honest advice about my chances! im planning on applying umich and cornell this year, both to school of engineering

SAT1 (one sitting): CR 680 M 800 W 650 (Total 2130) [retaking in december]
SAT2: not taking yet

UM unweighted GPA: Scored AAABE for GCE A levels

Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
- Competitive badminton for 9 years with leadership posts for 3 years with national team gold for 2 years and gold in individual doubles tournament
- Competitive ultimate frisbee for 2 years (both years team silver)

State or Country: Singapore

Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Male

Major strength/weakness: Afraid my SAT1 might not be competitive enough for international standards.
Other Factors/questions: Would A level results be taken into consideration and would my results then help or harm me?

Hey again. I think it is best I reply your earlier query here.

In my case, I graduated 2 yrs ago, but am trying to transfer this year to other colleges if possible. And, heard you’re applying to cornell. Haha. I’m there now and I really can’t stand the cold weather and loneliness!! So, I’m looking at California colleges to transfer.

So, from my experience, with the undergrads admissions I can say that your EC with the national badminton team and frisbee is good, but would be better if you had a greater variety.

And, for your A’Level grades I think they are ok. I tried calculating your Ranking points and I think it is about 72.5/80 (without PW). I think it is quite respectable.

And yes, I believe you should retake your SATs to boost your A’Level grades. Also, just take SAT 2’s to supplement your admission. For sporeans I doubt it is that hard to get 800 in all tests esp. if you take that subject at H2. And, competition for Cornell is quite great from S’poreans. A lot come here every year as compared to other Ivies!

Hope that helped.

thanks for replying again with all the advice! it helps a lot (:

to be clear, i wasnt really in the national badminton team haha. but my team just won the national level competition thats all. so its not that great! and i know im limiting myself in terms of only have sports on my side. but im hoping that will help me as much as possible i guess! hmm yea my rank points are around there (even with my PW A i believe) so not much changes there.

but now im sort of deciding between retaking SAT1 and taking SAT2. because of deferment and deadline issues, if i retake my SAT1, i leave myself with only michigan and possibly purdue(a new addition) to apply to. so i am considering taking SAT2 instead to include schools like cornell and carnegie mellon. however, not exactly sure how that would turn out with my current 2130.

haha you’re thinking of transferring to Cali? one of my sisters studied there and said the weather there is the best! she also told me to reconsider if i want to apply to places like michigan because apparently it just freezes over there. anyway you went over right after graduating right? how has it been at cornell!
