Chance a Smart Student With Low Grades for UVA, W&M, Georgetown, VTech, JMU etc.

Okay I'm a pretty smart student but I don't have like top grades, just decent. I've always taken challenging classes though. I was thinking my test scores could make up for some of that, but what do you think? Here's the complete list of schools (i know many of them are doubtful, i don't mind brutal honesty and I know georgetown, W&M etc. aren't easy schools):

UVA
William and mary
Georgetown
Virginia Tech
JMU
Penn State
American University
George Mason
George Washington University

Public high school in virginia (FCPS)
Male, black, 17 years old
Unweighted GPA: 3.5
Weighted: 3.7
For what it's worth, we operate on what's considered to be one of the toughest scales. it's a 6-point scale (94-100 is an A), and where other schools get .5 for honors and 1 for AP, we get .5 for AP, i felt this might be pertinent.

Senior Courses:
AP Calculus BC
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP Music Theory
Anatomy and Physiology
Latin IV
Journalism 5

SATs: M - 700, CR - 760, W - 780 = 2240/2400
SAT Subject Tests: US History - 740, Literature - 780

AP Exams:
World History - 3 (I know, I know)
AP Chemistry - 4
AP Psychology - 5
AP US - 5
AP Lang - 5

Honors: NHS, English NHS, Quill and Scroll (Journalism NHS), Science NHS, National Latin Exam (placed every year since 8th grade, gold medal/summa cum laude junior year), AP Scholar with distinction (grades of 3 or better in five AP exams)

Extracurricular (i only have a few but i feel i'm reasonably high up in all of them):
-Key Club Vice President
-Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper (and a member since 2005)
-It's Academic President, competed on the TV show and advanced (haven't played the next round yet). We got 5/50 in the region on an online tourney and are scheduled to compete in several more competitions coming soon.
-Varsity Track and field (shot put) since sophomore year, district participant last year.
-Also, and for what it's worth, was invited back to regional auditions for Jeopardy's teen tournament

Well judging by your exams, and your extracurricular activities. As well as your GPS being not that bad, I think you have a chance to make most of your schools. Stop being so hard on yourself lol, your grades are fine. Good luck!

In- Va Tech, Penn State, GW, Mason, American, JMU
Match- UVirginia
Reach- W&M, Georgetown

truthfully, since your a minority i think you’ll be in at all schools. you might even want to try for some ivy leagues. your sats are stellar and your gpa really isn’t that bad considering you’re taking many APs.

can you chance me??? here:

I am a senior at William and Mary. I believe you will be accepted at William and Mary, UVA,…all of the Virginia schools that you listed.

Great job! Best of luck to you. Since you are an African American male, I would not be surprised if you got into every school on your list.

Peace,
Pedsox

You have a great chance of getting in to most of the schools you listed.

But you should think about recommendations and your essays because they play a major role in your applications.

i think you could get into all those schools. the only questions are Georgetown and William and Mary, and i’d say you have really good chances for those schools. your GPA could be a negative, but strong SAT and ECs more than cover for that.

i’m URM and you actually have very similar stats to mine, better ECs even, and i am applying to some Ivy leagues + Stanford and MIT. so i’m sure you could be a competitive applicant anywhere. don’t apply though, you’ll hurt my chances LOL

GPA is a little low, but Fairfax County is recognized for its rigor. SATs and extracurriculars are all solid, and being black will definitely help. ;)

UVA - high match/match
William and mary - high match/match
Georgetown - low reach
Virginia Tech - in
JMU - sorry, don’t know
Penn State - match
American University - in
George Mason - don’t know
George Washington University - match

Soulside Journey got it right on. I would put an “in” next to JMU.

Thanks so much for chancing me guys, it means a lot. Does anyone want a chance in return?

And yeah from all accounts it looks like being black is going to help out a bit. I always feel somewhat embarrassed when people tell me that. Does it really count for all that much?

same what soulside said, except in at JMU and George Mason too. acceptance rate there is over 50%.

and being black does make a difference, especially UVA because they wanna keep their (i think) #1 african american graduation rate. i wish being indian helped too haha

chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/609117-chances-duke-uva-chicago-william-mary-vt-wake.html

i always feel guilty hearing that haha but yeah i guess it is some help. i’ve always thought that i would want to go to UVA above all, but recently i’ve entertained the idea of going to w&m or georgetown. and i never really thought i could get into those schools but my SATs turned out pretty well so i thought i’d think about it.

You’re black. That helps.

The only two places I know about on your list are JMU and Penn State, and I think you’re pretty safe for those two.

Based on our experience last year, I think you would be in at JMU, possibly borderline for their honors program (SAT’s are excellent, GPA is what’s borderline) and you can qualify for it based on 1st semester freshman grades). UVA and W&M might be stretches just based on the number of applicants they get from NoVA; I have no idea if you have an advantage here or not. Our experience last year with W&M suggests they factor heavily your showing interest by visiting and the not-mandatory (but really recommended) on-campus interview. I think you’d have a good shot at Tech and Penn State; GMU is a safety.

+1 on strong recommendations and essay. Good luck!

I think you have an excellent chance with maybe W&M, UVA, and Georgetown being reaches. Your scores are beastly and your courseload is pretty hefty, so I’d be expecting some thick letters come springtime if I were you!
