Chance A Somewhat Average Hispanic Kid!!!

Race: second-generation Hispanic (dad is Salvadorian, mom is Mexican. They immigrated in 1990 and became citizens in 2000.)

Gender: M

Location: Germantown, Tennessee (suburb of Memphis)

GPA: unweighted 3.42/4.0. My school uses a very tough grading system where 93-100 is an A and 85-92 is a B. This year my GPA was a 3.83, so my grades show a definite upward trend. I also go to one of the top 5 public schools in Tennessee. If my GPA was on a 10-point scale it would be about a 3.7

Class Rank: between 25-30%/566 (won't be sure until next year)

Avg. Grade: 91.68

Type of School: Competitive public school that is known statewide. Average ACT at my school is a 23.6.

Honors I've Taken: Honors Geometry, Honors English, Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Spanish III, Honors Algebra II, Honors Pre-Calculus, Honors Spanish IV

APs I've Taken: AP Chem (4), AP Bio (5)

Next Year's Honors/AP: AP Calc BC, AP Physics C (both tests), AP Statistics

SAT: 800-M/640-R/740-W/10 essay. 2180 total/1440 M+R

PSAT: 206 overall

EC: Member of Model United Nations, member of 30+ Club, member of the high school bowling team. I have been bowling since 2000 and have won numerous citywide and statewide competitions and also a scholarship. I also play tennis and raquetball recreationally. I went to 2 engineering-related non-credit summer camps and spent a total of a month in them (2 weeks of general engineering, 1 week of ChemE, and 1 week of Materials Science).

Other: 2nd statewide in the National Spanish Exam (outside experience category), 2007, National Hispanic Honorable Mention at least (I heard you had to have a 3.5 to be a Scholar), National Commended Student

Intended Major: Materials Science, possibly with a minor or double major in physics. I'm very interested in nanotechnology.

Chance me at these schools please (all OOS, and I'm applying to engineering in all)

Hi fin01!

You're NOT average ... you're a pretty good student AND you're URM, though your GPA is slightly low, but that can be explained by your school's quirky grading system.

I've spent the entire day chancing people, so I'll bookmark this page and I promise I'll have you chanced by tomorrow afternoon.

If I don't, PM me so that I'll remember .... I'm very forgetful

Good luck!

Hi fin01! I'm happy to chance you ... but can you return the favor? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/538677-please-chance-me-i-d-really-really-appreciate.html.

Your GPA is a bit low at 3.42 UW, but you demonstrate an upward trend in addition to a more challenging courseload (Honors/AP). Your SAT score is very strong at 2180, easily confirming your PSAT score --- you may very well qualify to be a National Merit Commended student. Your ECs are good, but you don't seem to demonstrate any leadership (tho not necessary).

Overall, you're a good student with clear potential, and your URM status will help.

Chances:
Cornell: Slight reach (GPA is a bit low, SAT is right on --> they may very well admit you because of your URM status)
Carnegie Mellon: Slight reach (GPA is slightly below the average of 3.62, but SAT is also right on --- URM will help)
Northwestern: Reach (your GPA is way below average, but SAT is again right on)
Ga Tech: Match (not too certain about how good SAT + lower GPA will play)
Ohio State: Match
Penn State: Match
U Illinois Urbana: Match
North Carolina State: In
Univ of Wisconsin at Madison: Reach (GPA is below average of 3.77, SAT is right on)
Purdue: In, but COE admissions is more difficult
Va Tech: In

Good luck, and remember to return the favor!

Completely agree with ab2013. Hit it right on. Best of luck.

I think you're just fine for everything except Northwestern and Cornell, which are reach.

ab2013, for univ wisconsin madison that average GPA is because they accept many students with less challenging workloads. I think too many people merely look at the average GPA listed on some web site than the relative acceptance difficulty of the school. I'd say its a good match.

Cornell and Northwestern are the only reaches in my opinion

What about Case Western Reserve? I just found out about it today and am very interested.

b u m p

I would say you're in at Case Western Reserve :)

GPA is atrocious, but I would say in everywhere.

Hey Rosh why don't you just keep your opinions to yourself? No one needs your insults here. I certainly don't appreciate them, and the thread creator probably doesn't either.
