Chance a stressed out high school senior

WGPA: 4.14
UGPA: 3.77
WGPA (10-12): 4.35
Strong upward trend, I maintained a 5.0 in 7 AP classes last year. Got a lot of B's freshman year.

SAT: Reading 690 Writing 750 Math 750 (2190) retaking it in a few days, aiming for 2250 or higher
SAT II: Lit 710, USH 770
AP: 5s on Psych, Lang, US History, Art History, World History, and Studio Art. A 4 on AP Euro
Extra Curriculars: I'm in an elite art program at my school, I hold a leadership position in it (on the ECEB- like an ASB- for two years and am the student president of the Art department.) My conservatory meets 3 times a week, for two hours. It's a very rigorous program unique to my school. I had two internships throughout high school and a job at a crepe restaurant. I took an econ class, and aced it, at UCSD last summer.
Submitting an arts supplement- I think my portfolio is strong. I won best in class at the county fair, and two silver keys in the scholastic art and writing competition.

My letters of rec, I think, would be very good- I was very close with both of the teachers who wrote them.
I am a good essay writer.

Major: Art History or Economics
White Male
From California (if it helps)
I go to the top public school in San Diego County, and as far as test scores go, we're within I think the top 10 or 20 in the state.

shameless bump

Class rank?

school does not rank

I think it’s really difficult for people to chance on Pomona because it’s all about what they’re looking for in that specific year. I feel you on that one. Especially because we’re white, and they place a really high importance on accepting a diverse group. I think the art hook is going to help you a lot. From what I read, a lot of art supplement people get accepted. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Did you apply ED?

Regular Decision

just got back from my on campus interview- I think it went well.
I heard in the past that the interview sessions are evaluative, but are meant to be more of an opportunity for me to learn about the campus; meaning that it does not play a big role in their decision process. Is this true?

Having an interview can only help you, whereas not having an interview will not penalize. The interview is an opportunity for the College to put a face to the name - to make your app more three-dimensional. It does not carry a lot of weight compared to your academic creds, ECs, etc.

Good luck!

I think it’s intended to be an evaluative interview- I don’t know about you, but my interviewer definitely took lots of notes. My Georgetown one was the same way. They do give students the opportunity to ask lots of questions, partially to gauge a student’s interest and how much time they put into thinking questions through and such, and partially to actually help them make sure that school is really a place they could picture themselves at. I think it definitely does help in the admissions process- particularly if your stats aren’t the highest (not saying yours aren’t- more talking about myself). It gives colleges a chance to take a really holistic look at your application/you as a whole. Hope that helps  Also! I read that 80% of the students accepted interviewed, if that’s an indicator for anything.

Also- just curious… how long did your interview last?

I applied RD, didn’t interview, didn’t do the optional essay, was not in the top 10% of my maybe-a-bit-above-average high school, had no hooks, and got in. Only thing going for me was an interesting essay and good test scores. If admission thinks you’d make a contribution to the class, you’ll get in.

Also, being male helps!

My interview lasted for about 45 minutes give or take.
The girl who interviewed me was this sweet blonde girl from Nashville and we got into this really great discussion about David Foster Wallace for about ten minutes.

Thanks you guys!

my interview lasted for an hour! and the my senior interviewer offered to take me to the bus station afterward  i love pomona!

my interview was 1 1/2 hours! My interviewer had majored in physical education and he wanted to talk to me a lot about my playing lacrosse/how my two surgeries from sports injuries affected me/how I overcame everything. He seemed really impressed, so HOPEFULLY that helps. I’m so nervous I can’t barely stand it. It’s just sooo competitive. And I applied ED, so I’ll be finding out soon!

wow! Well good luck!

While pomona’s admissions seems very selective, it seems that they pay a lot of attention to the character of the applicant.
