Chance a stressed out sophomore in highschool :P

I know i shouldn't be so worried about college yet since i'm a sophomore, but i am haha. Majoring probably Business/Finance

Ethnicity: Asian Male
SAT I: My mom forced me to take the SATs as a sophomore and the results were not good.... in my opinion. I plan to raise this score to 2200+ . I will use this first time as a warning/incentive to study more for the SAT test.

SAT II:
690 Bio I
Plan to take Chem in June ( Hopefully like a 720-750? )
Plan to take Math II next year ( Hopefully 780-800? )

GPA:
Freshman year, i got around a 3.86 UW and a 4.3-ish weighted
This year, I plan to get straight A's so (hopefully) 4.0 UW and a 4.57 weighted
Junior year, i plan to take some more AP courses
Senior year, i also plan to take some more AP courses

Course Load: The hardest my school offers for my grade.

Rank: Hopefully top 10% , class size of around 250 kids

EC:
~40 Hours @ senior center
~40 Hours volunteering for music stuff
~20 Hours answering voice mails for an emergency assistance fund group
aprox. 100 hours volunteering
4 years Varsity golf ( hopefully i'll be captain next year. The coach implied i was basically on the team all 4 years :P )

JV basketball ( maybe 2 years )
Freshman cross country ( 1 year )
JV cross country ( maybe 2 years )
Key Club ( 1 year )
Math Club ( 3 years )

Completed all 8 grades of piano
Took a 1 week course at Georgetown University on Leadership & Ethics
Took a 2 week course at Brown University on Alternative Energy Engineering
Going to take a 1 week course called Youth of Business ( It's located in Columbia )
Going to take a 1 week golf camp at Cornell University
Going to take pre-college camp at Carnegie Mellon University

Awards:
7th out of ~50 in FBLA regional test for Intro to Business
4th out of ~15 in FBLA regional test for Intro to Technology Concepts
7 year award for piano
( no more awards =[ )

Soooo IF everything goes smoothly ( which it won't ), how do I look? Let's say I somehow accomplished all the "hopefully" things in the parenthesis and i raise my SAT I score to 2200. And during Junior year i get a 3.8 UW and like a 4.1 weighted ? And with golf, i plan to maybe rank regionally and maybe get noted for that =D

Would it make a huge difference if i did varsity basketball and varsity XC senior year also?
And for those who think i'm a troll, I'm not haha. I'm just a really stressed out sophomore that cares too much about college ...

So what are my chances at:

NYU Stern
Carnegie Mellon Tepper
Boston College
Cornell University
Georgetown University

bump please help

bump…

At the rate you’re going, you will be “competitive” for your schools. You won’t be super awesome, but you’ll be good. Keep it up. Kick it up a knotch

okay sweet as long as i’m going in the right direction. Thanks for responding =D

As in kick it up a knotch, do you mean to get a really high gpa or something?

As of now, Cornell and Georgetown are very, very, VERY high reaches. Unless you get your GPA up to at least a 4.5 I am a little skeptical. You also need a very high SAT score. BC and Mellon seem like matches. NYU Stern seems achievable, but it all depends on your SAT score. Good luck!

kick it up a notch as in: become president of 50 clubs, gain 1000 volunteer hours, get a 2400 SAT, get a 4.0 UW GPA, get 1st place awards in various competitions, etc.

^Yes, I’m being sarcastic in some ways, but that’s the idea if you want to be “safe” for your schools. Otherwise, you’re just “competitive.”

thanks for the responses! I’ll work hard on my gpa and SAT scores. I hate how the SATs are so weighted =[ they don’t even test if you’re smart …

I just found out i got 3 wrong on math and i got a 710. My cousin got 6 wrong and got a 670… does this make sense to anyone ?

oh and another question,

Do you think that playing basketball and golf will somewhat set me apart from my other chinese stereotypes? ( tennis/swimming )

Well that depends, what’s your handicap? If you’re a scratch golfer who could get recruited it will help a lot for acceptance, I’m not sure about breaking stereotypes though…

i’m workin on my handicap. I’m gonna work tough this spring. Without golf i don’t think i’ll stand out enough =/

Another question to CC members:

Do these courses seem rigorous enough?

Freshman:

Financial Markets(elective)
Intro to Web Design(elective)

My school is really competitive… so it seems to me that my course load isn’t tough enough. But now as i was typing this out, it seems pretty tough.

Any thoughts? Too tough? Too easy? Just right?

I’d try and get an AP english for your Junior year… 2 AP is kind of weak for 11th grade. Not to mention that they are both “1/2 year” courses; US hist is normally a one year course.

What was your SAT score?

my school doesn’t offer ap english for junior year =/

it was bad haha. I’m gonna work on it over this summer :P

oh and another question:

Do some colleges NOT count gym as part of your gpa ? Because if that’s true, my weighted gpa is higher =D

they only count core classes+foreign langauge. Not sure about music history/AP art classes though.

So you scored a “not good” score on the SAT but it was somewhere close to 2200 and you took it as a sophomore…you really are an Asian lol. Assuming you actually do get that 2200 and 4.57 GPA and get about 4.2, 4.3 cumulatively throughout high school, Cornell is gonna be a target/low reach in my opinion. NYU is a target, i think you’ll most likely get in there, same with BC. Make sure you have some kick ass essays. Good luck, don’t stress out, like you said you’re only a sophomore so try to relax a little. seriously, when i was a sophomore i only had like one school on my college list lol it was so far from my mind. haha take it easy

okay nice… if i’m doing this right, if i miraculously get straight A’s from now until the end of junior year, i’ll have a 4.68 weighted GPA lol

I got one stupid B in H. geo freshman year… 89.3 and teacher didn’t give it to me

^ oh didn’t see you post chandler.

Thanks dude. And no, my score is wayyy off of 2200 lol . My target is a 2250.

Thanks for the tips
