Enrichment programs:
I was accepted at a selective veterinary medicine program at Purdue University on the summer of 2011.

On a side note, I think that my writing skills are very good(according to the head of the English department at school) and that my letters of recommendation will be great as well since both of the teachers love me. xD

I hate to give you bad news but with that act score your chance of getting into duke is next to impossible. If you wanted to get in you would need at least a 32 on the act. Just because your a minority doesn’t mean automatic acceptance. And extracurriculars can only bring you so far. Definitely retake the act or sat.

I stand with graduate12. Your ACT score seems to a bit low for Duke. Although standardized test score is just one factor to be considered during admission process, low score cannot do you any good.

I agree about your ACT, although the other stats look good. Have you taken it more than once? If not, I would definitely try it again. My friend also got a 26 her first time, but then took it two more times and ended up raising to a 31. Good luck!

I actually know someone from my school that got in Duke with a 1740 on the SAT and lower SAT II’s than mine. His EC’s weren’t amazing either. My friend got into MIT ED with a 1950 on the SAT… and with a 660 on Math II >.>

That just goes to show that test scores really aren’t everything! Though yours are a little under Duke’s typical range, you obviously still have a chance at getting in. I would guess that there was something that Duke really liked in your friend who got in, and if they see that in you then you’ll be accepted too. I didn’t mean to suggest that you couldn’t get in with a 26 ACT, I just think it would be more challenging.

I am a current Duke student and an admissions office volunteer. I’ve also read a book about the selective admissions process by a former Duke admissions officer. Because Duke is becoming increasingly selective, I agree with most of the posters in saying that you should retake the ACT. Yes, it is only one factor of the admissions process. Yes, there are students who are admitted with lower scores than the median. And I know you don’t want to take it again. I took the ACT 3 times and the SAT twice because I originally got low scores, so I know how annoying it is to retake tests. However, unless you have an extenuating circumstance, are a first generation college student, or are a recruited athlete, low test scores will hurt you. Otherwise, you are a competitive Duke applicant. Duke is getting thousands of applications from students with really good grades and test scores, so whatever you can do to give yourself an edge will only help you. Therefore, I strongly recommend retaking it. Plus, you have nothing to lose by retaking it. Aim for a 31 or 32 if possible. Avoid comparing yourself to other applicants to Duke… just because they got in with lower numbers doesn’t mean you will. Good luck!
