USC Screenwriting alum here. I’ll just weigh in on that school’s application process to start.

First of all, double majoring in production and screenwriting at USC is not only redundant, it’s useless. SCA makes sure all of its students are well-exposed to all areas of film making; if you were a production major, you would be required to take a good chunk of writing classes and vice versa.

SCA’s application process is heavily weighted on the portfolio. I suggest you actually go to the USC forum here on CC as there are NUMEROUS recent threads about SCA portfolios, how to prepare, etc. You can also get some insight into what kind of students are generally accepted to the SCA programs. Your scores are really low for USC’s general admit population, but a strong SCA portfolio will let admissions overlook your grades.

That being said, you need to begin familiarizing yourself with the NYU and USC film portfolios and begin working on them now. For the first time this year, USC requires a video from production major applicants.

Also know that at USC, screenwriting is a BFA and as such, you are NOT allowed to double major unless you stay at school 5+ years. Production is a BA.

Finally – I am going to suggest, if you don’t have a strong creative portfolio, you look into USC’s Critical Studies program. You will still get A TON of writing and production experience and you would be allowed to double major. It’s a more “Academic” program, but most critical studies students go on to work in the industry after graduation. I personally think, having been through the screenwriting program, that Critical Studies offers a more comprehensive education because it allows you to explore subjects outside of film; nearly all of my critical studies friends have really awesome jobs in film and TV.

Please head over to the USC board and read the SCA threads. Post over there if you have more questions!

Chapman and Loyola Marymount are both great schools and I think you’ll have no problem getting in – just make sure you have a good portfolio!!!

A lot of people aren’t going to reply because you’re asking about PORTFOLIO-BASED PROGRAMS!!! Try posting on the arts board or the boards for USC and NYU as there are LOTS of film students on both. Did you not read anything I wrote?

^ I did read your post, Zelda Fitzgerald. I intend to ask on the USC and NYU forums, but I just wanted to know my chances for my non-film program schools as well, as I have a mix of both in consideration. I also wanted to know my chances on an academic perspective too, because I’m unsure on where I stand.

I think your chances are 50/50 for Wesleyan as well as for Vassar in the sense that both recruiit heavily in the south and would welcome the geographic diversity, however, both also receive more applications from African-American women than from African-American men (it’s the same playiing field for most colleges, I think). Come back after you’ve taken the ACT. Ideally, you’d want a score of 32 or above to increase your chances even more.

^Thanks. I took the ACT today and did terrible. I felt that I held up pretty well on the English and Reading, but the Math and Science tripped me up. I think I’ll stick with the SAT since I seem to do better on it.

Any more chances would be highly appreciated. Do you guys think I have a decent shot at my Matches/Reaches. Do they all seem in range with my stats. What should I shoot for on the SAT?

bump bump bump

more feedback would be appreciated
