Hook: URM (Hispanic)

I want to major in Biology.

well since this is the second time you’ve posted this same thread…your grades are gpa are low. your ACT score is where it should be. you’d be borderline if you were white. it’ll depend on how badly vandy needs some hispanic people in next years class. ED would help

I think you have a good chance if you apply ED. Your ACT is awesome, but they might wonder why your grades don’t match. Good luck! Vanderbilt is an awesome school.

Would they reject me solely based on my GPA?

There are many students with above a 4.0 and high test scores on Vanderbilt’s waiting list this year.
There are many fully qualified minority applicants who put Vandy apps in each year.
My son had a similar ACT to yours. It is not top quartile at Vandy anymore. Hard to believe but true at most top 20 colleges. A quarter of Vandy students did better. He tries to keep this in mind when prepping for exams…every one is talented and hard working at Vanderbilt.

So…admissions are really quite multi faceted and you should not count on Vanderbilt just because of your fine ACT. You should apply knowing they will give your application serious study and careful reading. Admission is no longer predictable or even fair to fully qualified students…there are just too many fully qualified applicants.

Focus on really getting to know Vandy and on predicting where you fit in and where you contribute. Write essays that are truthful and good reads. Talk sincerely with your references on Why Vandy and hope they write good letters for you. Seek out an Alum interview.

Apply ED if you can afford to do so and you have this figured out financially.

Lastly, apply to colleges where you are highly likely to be admitted and appreciate and respect your match colleges. Apply to more than one reach college and be realistic on the odds. My sons would have gone to their match colleges with pride but they did their best on reach apps.

If your lower grades were in your early years in high school, perhaps you can explain in a paragraph to them or discuss with your GC with her letter of reference…admissions officers aren’t looking for saints they are looking for people with potential and motivation and maturity. They know some fifteen year olds aren’t ready yet…but you will be almost 19 when you hit college…so define yourself to them.

you’ll get in ED or RD. Vanderbilt is changing very quickly. The administration is trying to revamp vandy’s image i.e. getting rid of all the bad stereotypes. Vanderbilt has difficulty attracting URM because 1) Vanderbilt’s name isnt as strong as other colleges in the top 20 such as Duke and Emory. 2) It is perceived to be very southern and homogenous. (that has changed). For the next couple of years vandy will be recruiting minorities heavily. I got into vanderbilt RD with mosaic. I had an 89 GPA 1980 SATS very strong ECs and recs, great essay. I think you’re a shoe in.
