Chance a UVA, Georgetown, U Chicago Hopeful!

Hi! I am a white female from Virginia. I am applying to UVA, Georgetown SFS, and U Chicago as well as a few safety schools.

UW GPA - 4.0
W GPA - 4.35

9 APs and 9 honors classes total.

Class size about 500. I do not know my exact ranking but I'm in around the top 2 percentile.

SAT: 2020 (640 CR, 680 M, 700 W)
ACT: 29
SAT II: 760 US History, 600 Literature

ECs- Editor of school lit magazine, over 100 hours of community service, member of year long highly competitive leadership program, writing tutor.

Work Experience- had an internship for the local government over the summer.

Teacher and Counselor recs should be excellent, strong essays.

I know my test scores aren't the best, but I'm hoping my academics and ECs will make up for it! Thanks!

UVA-Match
Georgetown/Chicago-Reach/Low Reach

Thanks! Any other opinions?

I think match at UVA and probably in if you did EA. Can’t really speak to the others.

Chance me!

Good profile but these are all tough schools. In state at UVA = best shot (one of my sons is a frosh there), but last year UVA’s median SAT was about 1400, with in state not being that much lower than the median. UVA already has around 14,000 EA applications and so likely will break their 30K-plus totals from last year. Big plus is your grades plus solid ECs. Minus though is your SAT II lit score of 600, and UVA strongly encourages submitting at least two SAT 2’s. Is it possible for you to take another SAT 2 soon?

Per Naviance (last three years of data) from my twins’ HS in NOVA, about half of the students with similar profiles made it in eventually (although not that many because profile is a bit lopsided), but they were typically wait listed first and so I would not be surprised if that happens. All of that said and noting that UVA is getting progressively tougher due to the volume of applicants, my guess is UVA = low reach (40 to 50% chance of admittance).

Chicago is a reach to a high reach and hard to pin down due to weight placed on essays. Last year my son got wait listed there with similar grades and APs as yours but 100 points higher SATs and higher SAT 2’s. His ECs were not as good as yours though, and so it would not surprise me if you got wait listed (last year, Chicago wait listed several thousand students but admitted just a handful of them, mostly athletes). So my guess 10 to 20% chance of admission.

Georgetown (I went there) pays a bit less attention to SATs than Chicago (although GU still manages to get high ones for medians, but will reach for lower SATs with other strong factors). But SFS among the GU schools probably pays the most attention to them.

In any event, at my kids’ HS per Naviance, GU accepted just 2/19 students (compared with UVA accepting about 35 of 110 that applied) but those acceptances did not correlate much with SATs and in the last three years GU has accepted students with SAT scores lower than yours. Like UVA, GU wants SAT 2’s and so I would again suggest taking one more to replace that Lit score. As things stand now, I would say you have about a 20 to 30% chance with SFS.

Thanks for the responses! UVA is definitely my top choice, especially when it comes to cost, the other two I’m applying to just to see what happens, although I already knew my chances were low. Using the naviance program, I should get into UVA, but there isn’t much info on the other two schools. I’m just glad that UVA looks at the SAT writing portion as well, because it is my highest score. I also applied to UVA under early action.

I agree with a lot of the posts above. UVA is a great match for you and I think you’ll get in. Georgetown is a slightly easier reach for your stats than UChicago is. I’d recommend taking an extra few SAT II’s, especially if you’re seriously looking into UChicago or Georgetown. You’ll do amazing :)

Chance me???

You’re a very strong candidate for UVA. Write a good essay and you should get in. It is a low match for you.

Georgetown is a high match and Chicago is a low reach.
