I'm applying for Mech Engineering. I will chance back!

My stats are:
2130 SAT (690 Reading, 800 Math, 640 writing)
800 Math SAT2, 700 Physics
95.1 GPA Unweighted
ECs are fairly strong- Boy scouts 11 years, Jazz band, Section leader, Theater for 4 years, Directed a play this December, Student council, Student Rep on our school board.
Most difficult classes our school offers. (I am not going to bother listing)
Glowing recs
A fairly good essay (being reworked)

Currently applying to:
Columbia
NYU Poly
Northwestern
Cooper Union (not expecting to get in at all)
Penn State-U Park

Columbia –> reach-ish. it’s an Ivy, ya know? but totally worth a shot
NYU Poly –> dean’s app? you’re in! I think. hope you get into honors, those scholarships are sick
Northwestern –> you’re in if you showed an interest, visited, etc lol. I had the same CR and Math SAT scores as you and almost the same SAT 2 scores, but they waitlisted me, I think, b/c I never showed an interest even remotely - besides by applying, ha.
Cooper Union –> reach
Penn State-U Park —> in!

thanks static! Anyone else?

Unfortunately those subpar SAT scores outside Math definitely hurt your chances.

Columbia –> high reach
NYU Poly –> match
Northwestern –> match
Cooper Union –> reach
Penn State-U Park —> safety

I don’t think it’s sub-par, for the most part, because you’re applying for engineering. NYU-Poly for instance will only look at CR and Math. A 1490/1600 is definitely stellar…or I hope so. I got the exact same Math/CR as you lol! I forgot what Northwestern did. But most college’ll probably look at the perfect math score and be like: nod nice. It’s hard to ignore a 3-digit number with an 8 as the first digit.

static75: Agreed, for some schools. It really depends on the school. At Columbia, for example, they don’t want students who are “one trick ponies” with little reading ability, especially since such schools are really a reach for anybody.

Overall, I think you have a good shot at engineering schools, maybe less so at generally highly competitive schools like Columbia.

Thank you very much! Forgot to mention that I was first out of about 125 in my class.

No problem!

I too am a Vermonter, by the way. Where are you from?

Buump. I assume everyone else will say pretty much the same thing.

Okay, so I figured it might be useful for people if I give an update. I didn’t end up applying to Cooper Union. I was accepted to everywhere I applied except for Columbia, where I am currently waitlisted, but I don’t think I will be pursuing that. I was accepted to UVMs Honors College, Rejected from Penn State’s, and am in the midst of NYU Poly’s.
