Chance a weirdo

<p>You might have seen me on the Yale threads, but I never came here, so here we go. ;)</p>

<p>Schools:
My first choice is Yale SCEA. For regular decision, I am going for Harvard, Princeton, NYU, Columbia, Macaulay Honors @ CUNY, and for safeties, Binghamton and SUNY Stony Brook. I am also open to any suggestions you might have.</p>

<p>Basic Info:
SAT I: 2170 - 760 Math, 730 Writing (8 or 9 essay, I can't remember), 680 Reading
SAT IIs: 780 Math II, 730 Chemistry, 740 Biology
ACT: 35 Composite - 36 Science, 36 Reading, 34 English, 35 Math, 32 Combined Writing with a 9 essay
Unweighted GPA: I am guessing it's a 4.00, I have had straight A's all throughout high school, I don't know my current average because my school was stupid and didn't give me a copy of my transcript/high school grades (it's around a 95).
*We don't weigh grades, and we don't rank.
APs: Chemistry (5), English Language & Composition (5), US History (4)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Literature, AP Biology, AP US Government, AP Latin: Virgil, AP Calculus BC, Yearbook
Major: Biology
State: NY
School Type: large, public, nationally renowned, 3000 kids with about 800 in my grade
Ethnicity: African-American (at least I look it, but I am also 1/2 Chinese)
Gender: Female</p>

<p>Extracurriculars:
Latin Club: Member for four years, volunteered at two Certamens (Latin competition) at my school, participated in two other Certamens at a neighboring school.
Photography Club: Co-founder and secretary, member for two years.
Intel Research Project: Participated for the past two summers, hoping to enter my paper (on stem cells and genetics of stem cells) into Siemens and Intel competitions.
Hospital Work: I am currently shadowing a surgeon this summer for my own interest.
Piano: I have been playing the piano since second grade (~10 years) and I have played small concerts in venues such as Merkin and Carnegie Halls. I am also going to send in a tape of my past two performances as a supplement with my applications.
Yearbook: I have participated for the maximum amount of two years, and I am going to be the photography editor next year (my senior year).</p>

<p>Awards:
National Merit Commended, most likely not getting Semi-Finalist (PSAT: 209 + State: NY = no way)
Most likely National Achievement something if I got Merit
A silver medal on the National Latin Exam
Two gold medals on the National Latin Exam</p>

<p>Other:
Essay: I am going to write about my vinyl collection. :)
Teacher Recommendations: From my Latin and my biology teacher, both of whom have known me for all four years of high school.
Counselor Recommendation: I am guessing it won't be very personal, since she has to cover for many many kids.
Additional Recommendation: From my piano teacher, who has known me for 10 years.</p>

<p>This is kind of difficult to judge b/c if Yale considered you as African American (not knowing you are also 1/2 Asian), I think you have a very good chance of getting in. However, if they know you are 1/2 Asian, Yale might end of being a reach for you; your GPA and ECs are pretty good, but you SATs could be higher.</p>

<p>^Do you think then that I should ignore the SAT and just send in the ACT?
But then again, I think if I send in the SAT IIs, then they will see the SAT I score anyway, but I’m not sure.</p>

<p>Just send in your ACT score with your SAT II’s and add how your’e African American and not Asian.</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>Well, I definitely am filling out that I am African-American, people don’t even believe me when I tell them that I am Asian anyway. I feel like I’m cheating at something when I do that though.</p>

<p>No, I’m half Hispanic and German. I always put Hispanic when they ask because obviously it looks better. It’s not like you’re NOT African Amerian so you’re not lying.</p>

<p>Yale is different because you can’t send in SAT IIs without sending in your SATs. They don’t accept scorechoice. I’m in the exact same position as you though, my ACTs being a 35 and me not being able to hit 700 on the SAT CR. I’m just planning on sending in my ACTs though, since my subject tests aren’t that amazing and I don’t want to risk being rejected because of a sub 700 score on my CR.
You have a lot going for you. I don’t know that being Asian is such a bad thing, especially when you mix it with your African-American background. Yale is a reach for most people, but you are definitely a competitive applicant.</p>

<p>Will the 680 CR really hurt that much? :(</p>

<p>If I was you I would definitely put that I am African American and not put anything about being Asian. I would also send the ACT scores and not the SAT scores. With all of this being said, you have a pretty good chance because of the URM status.
Best of luck.</p>

<p>^Ugh, but I put so much time and effort into those SATs…
If I do decide to send in just the ACTs, then I don’t have to send in SAT IIs? I was always pretty confused about this policy.</p>

<p>UVAhopeful doesnt Yale need to see some SAT IIs just for admission purposes? or does the ACT take care of that like it does for some schools?</p>

<p>"Yale requires results from all of the SAT I and SAT II tests or all of the ACT tests you have taken. If you choose to fulfill our testing requirement with SAT scores, then it is not necessary to send any scores from the ACT, even if you have taken the ACT. And if you choose to fulfill the requirement using the ACT, you do not need to send us any SAT scores, unless you wish. </p>

<p><strong><em>However, and this is important, if you elect to use the SAT scores, you must report all scores from all SAT exams (both SAT I and SAT II) that you have taken. If you elect to use ACT scores, you must report all scores from all ACT exams you have taken. And if you choose to use a combination of SAT and ACT results, we require that you report all scores from both agencies.</em></strong>"</p>

<p>I starred the important part for importance :slight_smile:
