In Fall 08, my total GPA (include non-transferable course) will be 3.61 or 3.58 (if I get a "B" in the English class)
Transferable GPA will be slightly better, it will be 3.66 or 3.60

with such common GPA, is it possible for me to get into UCSD or UCD?
below are the major I wanna get into
For UCD, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology B.S
For UCSD, Biology: Biochemistry and Cell Biology B.S.

Thx

Oops, I should post more detail.
I am in ccc and want to transfer, and I will finish both prerequisites and IGETC for UCSD in SP09.
for UCD, I will have one prerequisite not finished.. I wish that UCD would allow me to finish it in summer 09. I am not sure about this, so I will check it out later..

Also, i will also try UCB Molecular and Cell Biology, but i believe my chance is very low..

P.S I was a pretty bad student in the past, just hope this is not too late to work hard… :(

I take it that you’re applying in the fall. If that’s the case, then I think you’ll be in good shape for both schools. However, in the case of UCSD you may be having a close call. Biology is a really big major at UCSD and many pre-med students attend UCSD in hopes to secure the spots at the top medical schools. Their science departments are some of the best (their engineering rivals CalTech).

I suggest you do TAG for UCSD (you’ll get in and most likely get into the major). From what I hear, UCD is not a stickler for pre-req’s but I am unsure of how it works for such majors as bio or biochem.

I am very familiar with the UCSD science major competition and I must warn you that you’re looking at some tough stuff.

But Good Luck!

“Their science departments are some of the best (their engineering rivals CalTech).”

Uh, no. You might want to do a little more research on that.

“Also, i will also try UCB Molecular and Cell Biology, but i believe my chance is very low..”

From what I’ve seen on that informational pamphlet, the admission rate for intended biology major transfers is around 50%. I think you stand a solid chance. Here’s a caveat though – biology is not the easiest major. There is a lot of competition for top grades in MCB, which is the same for every other UC campus.

Jacobs School of Engineering? I’m saying it’s rivaling CalTech, not better than CalTech.

Their school of engineering is becoming one of the most competitive in California.

“I’m saying it’s rivaling CalTech, not better than CalTech.”

The word rivaling implies that the two are on par with each other.

The ranking compiled in this thread below clearly shows that this is not the case.

thx xleper17 and tastybeef.

I understand that it will be a lot of competition if i major in biochem, even my parents asked me to consider twice.
But I just love this major..hehe
Currently, I am testing my ability. In order to get the GPA I mentioned above, I must scores 4.0 for three semesters in row. (Since I screwed up my gpa in the past.)
I can predict that the coming summer and fall will be “hellish” for me. If I can achieve this 4.0 target , I guess I am also able to compete with other students in UC.
I know that I am not the brightest student, so I work hardest. =D
