Salut! I am currently a high school senior at a public Texas school, and I need a bit of advice for applying. I am seriously considering applying early admission for this school, but I have a few key weaknesses in my application...as you'll see soon enough

Location: Sugar land, Texas
GPA: 3.77 UW 5.23 Weighted (6 scale)
SAT: 1710 ( Yeah...thats the big one)
Rank: About top 8-9% (51/576)
Ethnicity: Asian

Extra-Curriculars: I'm a member of my schools' Nation Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, The Bowling Club, Vice President of Model UN, and Officer of The Chess Club

Volunteering/Work: I volunteer every Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve for about 7 hours at a community center in downtown Houston. I'll have about 24-30 hours by the time I graduate

My teacher/counsellor recommendations will be top notch as I have extremely good relations with all parties.

AP Classes: AP Bio (4) AP Psychology (4) AP English 3 (3) AP Chemistry (N/A) AP English (N/A) AP Govt/Eco (N/A) AP Environmental Science (N/A)

My main worries about my application is my "Average" SAT scores and my class rank. My school has a notorious reputation of seniors dropping out their last year, so my rank isnt as secure as I had hoped.

I am considering taking the ACT, but there is no guaranteed I will do any better and if I will get my scores fast enough to meet the early admission deadline.

So, my main question is this. Should I apply early, or attempt to improve my Standardized test scores and then apply regular?

too bad you didn’t take the ACT today. apply early so they have your current rank - if you end up dropping below top 10% that’s more important than scores. in your app tell them you are taking the next sitting of the ACT and retaking SAT and will send those scores as soon as they are available.

bro, i’m asian (pakistani), had a 3.77 W gpa, and was in the 2nd quartile of my rank (like 200 something out of 700 something) and i got in. but then again, i had a 30 ACT and a 2060 SAT.

It doesn’t matter what your sat/act scores are if you are in top 10%, you will be admitted. You don’t say what college/major you want. This is where your low sat might come into play

have you gone to campus on an offical tour?
have you gone to the college of vet med for a tour?
have you done any of the programs for Jr/Sr high school kids?
what kind of interest have you shown in A&M that you can put on your college application?
answer these questions and break down the SAT scores for me and I will give my opinion (for what it is worth)

Christ really? I always thought TAMU generally lax with their admission besides their business honors of course.

So, what do I need to get my SAT up too? I thought the life sciences were easier to go to, seeing how only 9% of the student body major in it. If it gets any worst, why not just go to UT?

Nope. Not necessarily. You won’t get in UT bims with those scores either. Your math sat less than 600 is one problem.
You have automatic admission to A&M. Just questionable for certain majors and bims is one of them. Business, engineering, and architecture too.

That would be a viable option if your test scores were higher. As it stands, you would have even more problems getting into your intended major at UT.

You know what? You guys are absolutely right. Somehow I got it into my mind that just because it’s senior year and I’m already top 10% I dont have to try anymore.

I signed up for the ACT this morning as well as a biology SAT subject test. I bought an ACT study guide, and I just talked with my counselor about scheduling a college visit. I’m gonna ROCK the ACT.

Hopefully the next time you guys see me is in the Fall of 2011.

fabulous!
Some kids do much better on ACT - I bet you will rock the ACT.
Enjoy your campus visit - be sure to make an appointment in the BIMS dept too. write thank you notes to the people you speak with.
And see you in next fall

One option is to get accepted to A&M, be a General Studies major, and just make really good grades while here. Then you can switch into BIMS. But no, A&M is not lax with admissions haha… unless you count the 10% rule. :P

My act isn’t looking that well either, I only got a 26 on my practice ones. The only good thing so far, is that Ive gotten 780-800 on all my bio 2 practice tests. Still my situation is pretty bad now isnt it?
