Chance after 1st Quarter/Mid Year Grades?

Hi everyone! I know these threads get annoying but oh well. So I applied to Pitt a while ago and recieved a letter asking for my mid year grades. I sent them my first quarter grades about the last week in November and haven't heard back. My stats:

GPA. 3.68 weighted
ACT: 33
AP/IB Classes; Took IB for one year, then dropped it. Taking AP Chemistry this year.
On my transcript I have an F in IB Physics which is probably a reason I didn't just get in.

Essay was quite good as well as recommendations.

ECs are amazing...leadership positions in most of them (Stage Crew Head of our theater company, president of the Tv/Film Club, technology committee head of student council).

I go to a public school in PA...I'm a guy.

This years classes are: AP Chem, Calc, Comp Sci I and II, English Honors, Genetics honors, philosophy

My first quarter grades are all As and a B in Chem and Calc...

So basically I just want to know if they're still processing my Q1 grades still or they still want my Mid year grades. Do you think I'll get accepted due to my quarter grades?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

I think you’d get in after they see some of your grades senior year (whether it be quarter or midyear I don’t know, but your quarter grades sound good). It looks like the only reason they were reluctant to accept you right away was because of your IB Physics grade since your ACT and GPA are otherwise strong.

Actually, now that I look at it it’s the ACT that’s strong but the GPA is weaker since it’s weighted.

I called Pitt earlier today and they said they received my Q1 grades but are still waiting on my mid year. I hope that they can get me in…

I’ll put it to you this way. Pitt has a terrible admissions office and they often mix information up. Also, when you call more than once you will often find two different answers for your one question. You do have a good chance of getting in because you have a solid high school background. Your ACTs are also strong. While most schools are starting to place less weight on SATs/ACTs or completely abolishing them, Pitt continues to use them to determine who’s qualified or not. It dictate scholarship eligibility and admissions into certain programs there. Again, I don’t know their logic. I will comment though that Pitt is an awesome school, but you just have to put up with their unorganized admissions office and administration.

There’s no need to single out Pitt for using the SAT/ACT as a major factor in admissions. The overwhelming majority of state schools admit students based on test scores, like it or not.

This isn’t about state schools, it’s about Pitt. More specifically it’s about their admissions office. Yes, I agree that state schools do use that same narrow criteria for admissions. It is understandable that Pitt processes so many applications. However, they still need to be organized and present themselves as a welcoming staff to the students. From personal experience, they were very rude. Now that I’m in, the nightmare is over. For the college-bound high school senior, hang in there and keep working hard.

rmc,

I would have to disagree that the office has that bad necessarily. I was extremely impressed by how welcoming the school has been and how informative they have been. I live in Missouri and when I first visited I was extremely impressed with the admissions session they gave and the tour guides afterwards. I’ve visited a bunch of schools and I’d say that Pitt has done the best possibly.
