Chance an Asian Art Kid! (please)

Hello, thank you for any potential responses. I really appreciate your time I’m new to CC so I wasn’t sure how to find the appropriate thread. Here are my stats! I’m a junior with a current major in visual arts who plans to attend the SFS or major in poli sci with concentration in international relations/minor in language (depending on the school).

General Stats:
-Asian Female
-Dad is PhD, Mom is currently working on PhD
-Visual Arts student w/3 art classes per day
-Ranking: 1 or 2 out of 250 (I go to an audition-only performing/visual arts high school, which is why each class is so small! We’re sister schools with another school on campus where we take our academics. That school has around 2000 students and we’re ranked separately bc our arts-based curriculum tends to drag down our GPAs)

Applying to: (also open to any suggestions that you feel would suit me!)
-Georgetown SFS
-GW
-Hopkins
-Yale
-Columbia
-UPenn
-UMiami
-NYU

GPA:
4.0 UW
4.6 W

PSAT:
200 in sophomore year
215 in junior year (should be high enough for semifinalist (from FL))

Your extracurriculars are really good but your test scores and stuff are ok.

yeah for SFS and the ivies you definitely need a better sat score, or maybe try the act of the sat isn’t your thing, but I would say shoot for at least 2200 for a good chance at those schools

Are you submitting art supplement? I am considering submitting one but not sure what direction I should focus on… i am more like a math&science guy but I love art and think I am pretty good at it. Let me know if you have any advice!

And why don’t you consider Brown? There is a combined program for Brown and RISD. I am applying to Brown for PLME program but gonna try to take some classes at RISD if I can. And I agree with others that if you get your score a bit higher you should be fine.

So far you’ve got quite a good shot, since your first attempt was 2100 in your sophomore year perhaps you may be able to boost up to ~2300 with greater practice. As for extracurriculars and programs it seems you have achieved quite an amazing amount, I doubt you’ll get rejected to 25% of the colleges enumerated if you do increase that score. However, make sure to do VERY well in the essay by being yourself–> be yourself, be yourself. I’m sure everyone knows this but these Ivy Leagues want to familiarize themselves with you, it’s evident that you’re a leader and have sufficient academics to be enrolled in an established institution like Yale or Columbia. Make sure to not procrastinate with the applications, choose teachers who know you very well not just by GPA given. Ultimately, if you are given an interview then I recommend you study the University thoroughly and tell the interviewer what really interests you.

@jhgong I would, but I’m not sure how it works! Do you? I’d love your advice.
However, in your regards of what direction to go, I’m assuming the supplement is a portfolio. I would say 1/3 technical skill, 1/3 design ability, 1/3 conceptual skills. This is what my teachers at school advise, and we’ve sent tons of kids to RISD, MICA, Ringling, SAIC, etc. I absolutely love art just as much as I love international affairs, but it’s a much more competitive field for me personally, which is why I stopped considering art schools/majors. IR came to me much more quickly whilst I’ve labored over my artistic skills for over 12 years. What kind of work do you make? I’ve done a lot of technical work but spent most of my jr year doing abstract/design work. I’ve also helped design logos and things for a family member’s clothing line which does fairly well. Thank you for your advice :slight_smile:

@Hamlin Thank you, I really appreciate your advice! I think on paper I’m no different than the average applicant to most of these schools, but interviews are my specialty :slight_smile: I’ve got a few essays written out and have been going through them with my teachers and advisors. Those scores are DEFINITELY going up, I’ve been studying my butt off.

@anniecmyk When I applied to Columbia and Cornell through Common App they supplied me with two links to upload supplemental materials. You should be able to upload a work of yours and et cetera through that, I’m uncertain if other Universities supply that option as well.

It’s my pleasure, I enjoy meeting highly motivated and academically talented individuals like yourself. Keep at it, anniecmyk, you’re certainly going places. I hope all goes well for you :slight_smile:

@anniecmyk
I am not sure how to do RISD/Brown program but you should check out Brown admissions webpage. If I am not committed to medicine I would love to do this program! I enjoy doing realistic drawings (various media but I prefer pencil, pastel, and water color). I recently have been trying to do abstract. I thought that abstract is more fun and easier but I am usually more attracted to how accurately I can depict things. I love doing semi-impressionist drawings also!

@jhgong Oh I meant do you know how supplements work, but Hamlin explained it! I can actually tell you about the RISD/Brown program as we’ve had a few people go that route. You have to get into RISD separately, then Brown separately, THEN apply for the RISD/Brown program. It’s highly competitive with an acceptance rate of under 10%. Usually the class is under 20 people. However, it’s a fantastic program that will do great things for you so I encourage you to apply :slight_smile: At art schools everybody has to do foundation work, so you all get refined. So in the mean time, I encourage you to continue pushing abstract and conceptual work, with a greater focus on design and composition. Technical skill can be taught, but creativity and ideas cannot. I also suggest you go to a portfolio day and get your work checked out by professional recruiters of the schools :slight_smile:

@anniecmyk
Oh I think I am confusing you. I am applying to PLME program which is a guaranteed med program. I am submitting art supplement just to show that I love art. (I am planning to double major chemistry and art) Do you know, by any chance, art competitions I could participate in before ED deadline? My school roommate and I are like the best artists at school and trying to get either awards or scholarships from art competitions. I know it’s tough but I guess it’s worth trying. I usually help my teacher for designing local business’s t shirts. Once t shirts with my drawing on were sold out at one national sailboat race competition!!

@jhgong Try Scholastic Young Arts! It’s the only big well known national one and opens next week :slight_smile: Good luck!

I think you have a decent shot at most. Those art awards that show your passion in art are really nice and I think that you should emphasize those as a strength. Although test scores are not as high as some would prefer, I don’t think they will impact you much, as you have done well enough, and they would not be a deal breaker (though if you could improve, it would not be bad). Good luck! I think you’ll do well in the application process

@anniecmyk
Okay thank you!!
