major: Econ or IR
universities aiming for: UPenn, Duke (dad's connections with the admissions office), Northwestern University, Notre Dame, NYU, Case Western Reserve, Michigan Ann Arbor, UC berkeley, Dartmouth, BC

My dad has a PhD and yet i sitll have bad gpa. will that hurt a lot?

“Asian idiot”? Isn’t that an oxymoron? 3.5 isn’t a bad gpa, especially if you’re taking honors classes. I couldn’t tell you if you’d get into those schools or not, but in a general sort of way…it looks like you’re doing pretty well :)

I can’t speak about connections. There are indeed “idiots” (totally incompetent ppl) from my school who get into colleges like Dartmouth and Cornell who have parents with connections (they donate money, know admissions, etc.) So I think they DO make quite a difference if you have a legit connection to Duke.

You weren’t very specific about what you do. I wasn’t impressed by your academics. You need APs. You need SAT IIs. Even if you have connections, I can’t see you going to any top schools without the scores (And good ones, too…into 700s at least)
