Chance an asian junior sans typical asian characteristics

I live in the Dallas/Fortworth area and go to a nationally recognized school district (PISD) with a JROTC in the top 2 percent internationally. I'm also in the IB/IH program, which is like AP but harder and with extra requirements, like crazylong essays on Crime and Punishment.

A counselor told me that without some of my EC's I'd be a typical asian student who plays an instrument and writes poems about how I'm misunderstood and how the world needs to change (come on, we've all done it! xD) but I should be able to stand out within the Asian pool.

EXAMS!!!!!
I'm taking a crapload...lol I'm honestly tired already. All my classes 9-10 grade were IH (basically honors) except for JROTC. My classes 11-12 are all IB except for AP Art History, and JROTC as well.
I took AP Human Geo soph year and got a 5.
Exams this year: AP Art History, AP US History, AP Spanish, AP English, IB Spanish SL, IB Physics SL
Exams next year: IB Calculus SL, IB English HL, IB Theory of Knowledge, IB Biology HL, and other undetermined AP courses. >.>

I'm really counting on the international Academic Bowl and ridiculous dedication to JROTC because my school academics don't really stand out in the Asian pool.

Chance me for:
Carnegie Mellon
UT Austin Plan II
Johns Hopkins
Dartmouth
Oberlin
Duke
Vanderbilt
Stanford

bump…chance me please? i’m really anxious, especially about Plan II

GPA a little bit low for your schools but i think SAT and volunteer work will cover that.Thats for ivy league at least. For other schools I would say you are in

Wow! I think you’re very impressive. Love the air rifle/ROTC angle. It shows a very unique perspective and passion. I know that some excellent schools (Swarthmore for instance) are looking for kids who have a very powerful passion for something, and whose interests tell a “story” about who he or she is. I definitely think you have that. I’d say you have a great shot (ha ha) at whatever it is you want to do.

i’d say the JROTC is a huuuuge plus b/c most asian people definitely dont gravitate towards that kind of stuff!! put that at the top of your apps or somewhere really noticeable because it def does stand out.
your GPA is a bit low for ivies imo but i think taht for the colleges you starred (carnegie and UT Austin) you have a very very very good chance. they’re also colleges that put more emphasis on well-roundedness (ECs and awards) as opposed to just test scores and GPA. best of luck!!

GPA is looked at in context. if it’s that low, yet still top 5% of class, it’s not too shabby.

the only thing that might hold you back is the GPA.
I think you have a good chance everywhere

Thank you so much, guys  I was panicking because it’s hard to look at your own stats from an objective viewpoint - really appreciate the help! And I’ll pimp out the JROTC bits as much as possible.

bump! Could somebody give me chances at the individual programs? I’d really appreciate it and I’ll also chance back!

I think you’re good enough already. Just my opinion…I’m Asian too.

Even with consideration of context, your GPA is going to hurt you significantly.

I don’t think your GPA will hurt you THAT significantly, however, I think you can get into CMU.

Truthfully, no chances are accurate as there are many variables in college admissions. No one online can tell you you can’t do something.

I think you should give it your all. You have a great GPA, great class rank, awesome extracurriculars, and seem really well rounded. :)

Good luck with your applications.

~ Theos

No one claims to give fully accurate chances. I don’t think the OP would have asked if he didn’t expect anyone to give helpful responses.

I’m a chick, silverturtle. :] And would my rank make up for the GPA?

bump!

I’m doing a major conference directed towards Asian parents in the Dallas area about parenting, culture, and the huge relationship gap that stems from them and their children. Would this help or be something small?

Asian girl doing ROTC? Wow, that’s extremely unique. If you highlight that, you shouldn’t have any problems getting into any of you schools!

Stanford’s a reach for everyone, but I like your odds.

Chance me back (slightly more typical asian)
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/759277-chance-me-i-need-essay-ideas-ucs-hyps.html

I think JROTC is really cool for an Asian, especially to be so dedicated. I don’t know many people in JROTC at all. For piano stuff, I would send a music supplement and put your competitions in there since they ask for it there. I think you have a good shot.

1390 is a huge class size btw. Try to boost that GPA a little!

Guys - the GPA is pretty good. Esp. with all those ECs and ROTC. (I used to go to your district… I might even know you… CREEPY! sorry) This is a district where a .01 difference in your GPA can bring you down to top 20 (if your lucky).

I think that you have a better chance at the Ivies then most people (ie. not a high reach/dream). I’d be truly surprised if you didn’t make it into Carnegie Mellon…

Good luck!
