Chance an Asian!

Junior right now. Chances ED and RD. Stats incomplete, I selected the main things.

Asian Male in NJ (best race/demographic combination you could have huh?)
Competitive Public

GPA: UW – 3.88, W – 4.38 (the school’s grading system was changed at the beginning of my junior year, grading went from A = >=95% to A = >=93% and AP/honors weighting was doubled from .25/.50 to .50/1.0 respectively; so my W GPA is a useless indicator :()

Rank: School doesn’t release it. But, I’m in top 5% in a class of about 600.

Letter Grades: Only one B+ as a freshman. Rest were A’s and A-‘s

SAT IIs: MathII – 800 (2nd try, first time was low), Bio – 710 (done w/ H. Bio, I probably won’t submit this), Chem and Latin – awaiting scores

*I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting stuff here and there…

Summer (this is the big one)

Researched summer before sophomore year for over 300 hrs at a microbiology lab at a local university. Wrote a report and submitted to regional science fair for practice. No results of course. Performed small-scale labs. Will return this summer to work on my Intel Project to be submitted next year. Will be receiving a supplemental rec from professor and submitting research with my application. Expected total of over 600 hrs once done this summer. I only wish I had started sooner (freshman year perhaps).

Misc. – Played piano for 6 yrs (I still hate the bloody thing, if that’s any indication of my proficiency). Play tennis, take lessons at a local racquet club (again, I suck, it’s just a hobby).

Well that’s it. I don’t know how much I might have left out, but I pretty much summed up the big stuff. Gimme chances ED and RD. Thx.

give us the college you're applying to...

Cornell. I thought that was implied seeing as I'm posting in the Cornell forum... :) My bad.

I think he means what college within Cornell...

i.e. Arts and Sciences, Hotel Management, etc...

You figure Asian people can pick up on that one =/

umm/ randomn guess... let's see, w/ that course load + nationality... engineering???

but premed, so ag or arts.

you've got very typical asian stats. but you don't seem to really excel in anything you do. i would put down piano and tennis as hobbies, and not emphasize them too much. You also seemed to have dabbled in a lot of things, but what are you passionate about? There are obviously a lot of science and math things, but you don't really show that you are really good at them. I would only emphasize the ones that won you meaningful awards. Your research is a big plus, if you can show that you really did something, and are not just using it for resume padding. And your scores are fine. They will not help or hinder you from getting in.

there are premed engineers and also premeds in human ecology.

CAS :) (Bio major)

Yeah, I'm trying to dodge the 'typical asian applicant' stereotype. Actually very good in debate (won several speaker awards) which will be one of the passions I stress in my essays/application to break out of the stereotype. Science is another passion and more specifically, research. I never beasted any national competition or anything, but I participated in as many things as I could and I think that, at the very least, shows dedication.

lol sadly you're still the typical asian applicant. are you applying ED? if you are, your chances are probably better, but otherwise, i wouldn't be surprised if you got waitlisted even with those stats.

im gonna say very good chances at CAS for ed and rd.
dont worry about what everyone else says, and dont be ashamed of what you are just to 'dodge' stereotypes. i've seen first hand how many 'typical asians' get in anyway, with worse stats.

who said he doesnt 'excel' at anything? look at his academics... maybe he's not a star football player, but with the profession he's aiming for, he doesnt need to be one.

remember, pretty much everyone agrees that chance threads on CC are totally pointless

"remember, pretty much everyone agrees that chance threads on CC are totally pointless"

As do I, the only reason I use them is to receive criticism of my faults and opinions of my caliber as an applicant. You can't expect too much from an online forum! Thx for all the comments.

No, the thing is that most people on these threads are extremely unqualified to state any worthy opinion about this stuff. A lot of people on here are still in high school even...
If you're applying to arts and sciences, I'd give you a 20% chance... its tought to get in.

typical asian

His stats are not typical for an applicant of any race applying to any college.

You also seemed to have dabbled in a lot of things, but what are you passionate about?
If you couldn't see the focus he put on the medical sciences, maybe you should try actually reading the post.

you don't seem to really excel in anything you do.
I'm not even going to comment on this.

I think you guys are seriously underestimating his chances because YOU can't look beyond the stereotype and can't accept that far from all asian people do nothing but study. The guy is definitely as involved as any white applicant and his strong academics are only going to help him. I think the OP has a great chance of getting to Cornell ED or RD (yes, i'm purposely being vaugue because i'm not an admissions officer).

BTW, i don't know if you can hold back that one SAT 2 score, but i think you need to bother, a 710 is not going to hold you back.

i think you'd have a good chance ed.

i was admitted this year and i have to say, cornell admissions is getting really competitive especially CAS (and architecture). you have good stats but its hard to predict, a lot of good applicants are getting waitlisted/ rejected.

since you are premed maybe you should consider applying to agriculture or human ec. which are easier to get in to.

dont' worry about the whole "asian steroetype" thing . lol yur asian theres nothing you can do about it.
be yourself on your application. you have a lot of research and ecs. i think if you wrote a creative, interesting essay on your research experience demonstrating a lot of interest in your major and cornell (or the other colleges you have chances threads on) it would be very effective.

i hope that helps, good luck!

nameless, the list of what prospectiveMD does is impressive. but having done many of the same activities myself, i understand what each award means, and I think that admissions would too. i think that prospectiveMD also knows that almost all asian kids in new jersey are involved in the same things and have similar awards, and so to stand out he has to emphasize certain activities.

i believe that prospectiveMD could build a really good application, depending on how he puts it all together. his list of accomplishments isn't stellar, compared to other asians. and like it or not, affirmative action exists and so to have a better than 20% shot of getting in, you have to show that you're better than average.

i'd give 80%

im asian and i applied this year and got waitlisted there
but your stats are twice as good as mine
i think if you applied to cas you will get in in ed
just stay away from the engineering school (the one i applied)
which has a lot more asian applicants.

on the side note: i hate affirmative action so bad and part of it is our fault
why do asian have to care about education so much?

reading stats like this makes me thankful I went to a...not so great...high school =P
