Chance an Asian!

Junior right now. Chances ED and RD. Stats incomplete, I selected the main things.

Asian Male in NJ (best race/demographic combination you could have huh?)
Competitive Public

GPA: UW – 3.88, W – 4.38 (the school’s grading system was changed at the beginning of my junior year, grading went from A = >=95% to A = >=93% and AP/honors weighting was doubled from .25/.50 to .50/1.0 respectively; so my W GPA is a useless indicator :()

Rank: School doesn’t release it. But, I’m in top 5% in a class of about 600.

Letter Grades: Only one B+ as a freshman. Rest were A’s and A-‘s

APs: Physics B (frosh, 4 on test); rest were junior: Chem, Calc BC, Comp Sci A (took AB test), English
(expected (in order): 5, 5, 5, 4)

Senior Yr: All APs: Bio, Stat, English, Art History, Euro Hist, Latin

SAT I: M-800, CR – 730 (ugh…), W-740, Total – 2270 (retook recently, expecting better CR/W scores)

SAT IIs: MathII – 800 (2nd try, first time was low), Bio – 710 (done w/ H. Bio, I probably won’t submit this), Chem and Latin – awaiting scores

*I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting stuff here and there…

Summer (this is the big one)

Researched summer before sophomore year for over 300 hrs at a microbiology lab at a local university. Wrote a report and submitted to regional science fair for practice. No results of course. Performed small-scale labs. Will return this summer to work on my Intel Project to be submitted next year. Will be receiving a supplemental rec from professor and submitting research with my application. Expected total of over 600 hrs once done this summer. I only wish I had started sooner (freshman year perhaps).

Misc. – Played piano for 6 yrs (I still hate the bloody thing, if that’s any indication of my proficiency). Play tennis, take lessons at a local racquet club (again, I suck, it’s just a hobby).

Well that’s it. I don’t know how much I might have left out, but I pretty much summed up the big stuff. Gimme chances ED and RD. Thx.

0% chance for both. You're a clear reject.

Clearly, I'm being jocular. Regardless, if UMich does implement an ED/RD system and UMich is your dream school, then apply ED. You should should be fine for both nonetheless.

Umich is rolling decision, so you don't have to worry about early/regular decision.

Also, U of M reweights your GPA. Basically they remove all non-academic classes (can't remember if they count freshmen year or not), and remove all signs from grades (so B+,B,B- all count as a B) and recompute your GPA from that, so you'd have pretty close to a 4.0

Besides that...yeah, you're in.

Yeah, but rumors have been flowing around that ED/RD will be implemented next year. I'm slightly dubious of it, but would nonetheless welcome it as an alternative to the current system in place.

A few of my friends have been jerked about by deferrals and waitlists.

As I said in an earlier post, if Michigan does decide to implement a new admissions process the early thing will be nonbinding like EA. ..As told to me by an admissions officer at a college fair.

your stats are very good and your ECs are even better so id say you have a very good shot at UMich

You will get in. Very likely for honors as well.

Asian Male in NJ (best race/demographic combination you could have huh?)
Competitive Public

Oh man...I feel sorry for you.

thx for all the responses! for anyone familiar with it, how's premed at UMich? I know for a fact that it's considered a pretty good college for Eng but I'm not sure about their premed program. Thx.

Christ, I'm starting to think that the only reason I got in last year is because I'm one of the few Asians not going into the Engineering/Science field.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Me neither. But I'm pretty sure I got in because I fakely fulfill maybe diversity requirements.

U-M has a great pre-med program. But keep this in mind. From what I kinda know of pre-med, GPA is a really big thing as well as the MCATs for Med School. Since U-M tends to be pretty competitive, it might be harder to get a really good GPA here.

I know a lot of my friends are having trouble with pre med, most of them with 3.9/4.0 UW in HS, down to a 3.2-3.4 range. With that being said, I have one friend who got a full ride to MSU, and said that the pre med program there was "boring" so... I dunno. This is just what I hear from my friend's complaining, I know really nothing about pre med itself.

Im sorry
What is ED and RD?

Michigan doesn't have it, but ED = Early Decision, RD = Regular Decision.
