Income: 60 - 100K (I think close to 80K)

Rank: School does not rank, but I'm in the top 5%.

GPA: 4.00 WGPA: 4.74

SAT: 740 M 690 W (10) 710 CR
I plan on taking SAT IIs in October in Math II, Physics, and something else

Volunteering: By the end of October, I will have around 200 hours, through a handful of organizations

APs:
5 - Stat, US Gov
4- USH
Still unknown: Eng Lang, BC Calc, World, Micro, Macro

Extracurriculars:
9th & 10th Grade: Member of school chorus, practiced approximately 5 hours/week on my own.

10th Grade: 1st place at the County level in National History Day.

Starting since 11th grade, I've been a member of the Science and Math Honors Societies. I plan to run for leadership positions in both in September.

Also starting in 11th grade, I have been a member of Science Olympiad; I won several medals at the State level.

I am also the President of an artistic club, in which we held several contests.

I have been playing pick-up basketball all thoughout high school.

My main project right now is self-publishing a children's book by the end of August.

I plan to major in either Engineering or Business.

Assuming my recommendations are excellent,
What are my chances:

UMD - College Park
MIT
Notre Dame
Princeton
Vanderbilt
Texas A&M
Johns Hopkins
Standford
Carnegie Mellon

MIT, Stanford and Princeton are slight reaches although you do have a chance. Other than that I’d expect you’ll get in everywhere else and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear you’ll get into at least one of those reach schools. Good luck.

Only here is someone with a 4.0 GPA and a 2140 “an average kid”

I say REJECTED by all of them without a doubt.I mean “excellent” reccs can’t possibly make up for your 4.0 unweighted. And the 2140 SAT will only hurt you. I’d say you’re TOO average for college in general…
Stanford is your reach, so is JHU.

^^^^yea, seriously. that’s exactly what i was thinking too!

How does an AVERAGE kid have a 1450? Im pretty sure that the national average is low 1000’s. Im just saying.

then i’m just a failure.
hahaa…i suppose “average” is somewhat sane considering your reach schools…and i agree with what one of the earlier comments said that “it wouldn’t be a surprise if you got into at least one your higher reaches.”

as for stanford, one my friends got in this past school year while being waitlisted at columbia, harvard(not that surprising), nyu(surprising), and a few others.

she’s white, was valedictorian at one of trouble schools in our city, and her stats we’re similar to yours if not worse…maybe the sat was 100 points higher. she really stressed the essay…a lot of other kids got in with stats way worse than hers, with the help of some really good essays…her’s was an epiphany on life set parallel to a greek salad…people were olives and tomatoes…basically, be creative! & good luck =]

maybe i didn’t think that wholly through about stanford …essays were defintely a big part but her application profile(figuratively speaking) is really focused apart from being well-rounded enough…she’s an aspiring cardiologist and i think she’s like the youth president for the american heart association in charlotte or something…its a leadership position thats fairly rare among college applicants, at least that i know of. also, though our school as an entity is sub-par, certain niches really excel. for example a biology teacher we have is state & nationally renowned for making classes from reg bio to AP bio very innovative and raising our test scores. we have over 4 research groups at our small school that works regularly with technology that most high schoolers don’t access to…so show passion for narrowed purpose…sort of like the advice of aiming for president of one club rather than being a mere member in a dozen or so.

…but what do i know? again, best wishes =]

like others have said…I love how you call yourself “average!”

Lol yeah, I just meant that in terms of ppl who usually post on here.

I think the national SAT average is 520 M 508 CR.

umm yea it’s just really sad when i hear someone like yourself calling your stats “average” when tons people have stats WAY lower than you (shocking, i know!)

Average? Compared to what?

Stellar grades, great SAT scores (although writing subscore is iffy)

I see your affinity toward Science, but considering many other contenders (especially for MIT) are going to have steller science records, is there something you could utilize to add to your scientific merits? (Like a summer or school year research/science internship?) If you live near a university, I would definitely make use of your resources right now.

UMD - College Park - I don’t know
MIT - Mid to High Reach.
Notre Dame - hmmm…
Princeton - High Reach for anyone, really
Vanderbilt - High Match
Texas A&M - Match
Johns Hopkins - High Match, Low Reach
Standford - High Reach for anyone
Carnegie Mellon - Low Reach

Well, I plan on obtaining a paid internship at a government agency in energy ( can’t give name, you’ll figure out what HS I go to ) however, it won’t occur until next summer. But, if I gain acceptance by October or November, could I put that on my resume?

Hmmm…

Well, it certainly can’t hurt, right?

hey, so I’m also in Maryland…I’m sure we’d both get in UMCP haha.

Your major reach schools are going to MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and JHU. Be sure to go for an 800 math II in the fall, as a good amount of MIT applicants do. You’ll probably get into Texas A&M. As for ND, Vanderbilt, and CMU, I’d expect you’d get in at least one of them.
