Chance an Average Student?

Hello there! For anyone willing to chance a student that is eager to see how they stack up against colleges such as Tufts
I am thinking about other colleges, but Tufts is one of my top top colleges. But I do know how difficult it is to get admitted
Grades and Scores:
- 4.0 GPA (weighted, school does not give information on unweighted). Have only had A's and only 4 B's in high school career.
- Class Valedictorian (out of about 100 students)
- SAT 1: 1900 (1930 Superscore)
- SAT 2's: Just took Biology and Math, predict over 600
- ACT: Taking this Saturday, practice ACTs show scores between 29-31
- Honor Classes throughout high school, only allowed to take AP's by junior year
- Junior Year AP's: U.S. History, U.S Government and Politics, and Psychology, 5's on all of them
- Senior Year AP's: Biology, Italian, Literature, and Calculus

Extracurricular:
- Varsity Soccer
- Quiz Bowl Captain
- Vice President of NHS and NIHS
- Class Secretary
- Senior Editor of School Newspaper
-Intern at an up and coming SAT Prep Academy

Essays and Rec's:
- Writing essays is one of my strong points and have been highly praised by English teacher's on their composition.
- Have 4 letters that have been done, each of them that I believe think highly of me

Hooks: Come from a low income Hispanic family. I've had to take a up a job that has 20 - 24 hours work weeks (excluding extra hours that they force me to work, sometimes 10 hour shifts) to help pay for my own expenses and support my family.

So how do I look?

If you we were a white male I would say you have no shot. But as a URM you have a good chance.

yeah i think my ethnicity is a bit of a hook too, thanks for replying!

I think it is far more significant that you have taken on responsibility to help support your family. That shows tremendous maturity and character that makes your academic achievements that much more impressive. Good luck!

Apply EDII if Tufts is your first choice. Tufts is the kind of school to look carefully at the individual circumstances of each applicant so high match RD, match ED.

Make sure you write a great “Why Tufts” essay and you make a good 1-minute video also.

I think that everything about your profile looks impressive except those test scores, which are extremely weak for Tufts. As noted above, however, your URM status and your particular story might get you past that.
Good luck.

I wrote a blog post about the SATs a month ago that is relevant to those weighing in on whether the OP’s SATs are “strong.”

http://admissions.tufts.edu/blogs/inside-admissions/post/ive-got-answers-sat/

Does anyone on CC know whether or not a 1930 valedictorian with a slate of AP5s represents powerful academics for a low-income kid who works 25hrs/w in order to financially support his/her family? I don’t believe ethnicity factors into this at all: that’s a compelling academic record. Your thread’s title says ‘average’ - there is nothing average about your achievements in light of your other commitments.

I normally stay out of the “Chance me” threads, forgive me for parting ways with my own rules. To the OP: if you need it, and if you think there’s a gap between what you need to know and the guidance at your school, feel free to send me an email - daniel.grayson@tufts.edu - I’ll be happy to help.
